The advice I give : Fisher Price makes a camera that has a VERY important feature many adults don't consider and is mandatory for most kids I know. They can be dropped, thrown, stepped on, left in the backyard for a day or 2, used as a hammer, etc... Kids are rough on cameras.

The advice I actually used : Let your kid "borrow" your current point and shoot. Then when they break it you can upgrade to that new P&S you wanted, and take it out of the kid's allowance :-)

I will allow that I was pretty upset when i dropped my 110 Instamatic and it shattered - and I was a lot older than 7 at the time...

I got my girls a Canon PS A2200 refurb for about $60. My three year old knocked it from one of their hands and tweaked the lens (second camera he has done that too). Fortunately I was able to fix this one. Train them to use the wrist strap.

Just bought a used Canon G5 from Ann for near nothing and it is going to my son. He's Two. And it even does video. I figure by the time he hits three I will give him my 50D and move up to a full frame.

In locations where craigslist exists, there are always plenty of digital P&S cameras for sale for $20-50.
