Uhm it is considered poor form to drag PMs into forum threads...what happens in the PMs which are of course meant to be private messages, are meant to stay in the PMs. Just sayin. |

I was the fave. Yes, slight halos, but I felt the processing added to the heat. I love the spontaneous moment in time and the way the subjects are spread out through the frame. My score was an 8. |

Teehee! Well, at least youère taking it in good stride :-) Vultures always have bald heads, as this one does, because they are poking around in the depths of carcasses. The bright red on the head is its scalp, so thatès one way to tell them from a hawk. Lots of other differences too but faster for you to wiki it than for me to type it.
And if it makes you feel any better, awhile ago a DPCer thought there was a Condor (which are ultra-rare, HUGE and ugly as sin) hanging out in their backyard ...uhm nope, it was also a turkey vulture! Dang! |

I photographed it flying in New York City. So of course... not thinking vultures fly around here... I said... heck... has to be a hawk!LOL. Trust me... when I first looked at it in Ligthroom, I said... that looks almost like a vulture, but dismissed it and said Nah... not in the city. |

You have been around here for quite a while now, have developed a style that you seem to be happy with, have a profile page littered with awards from some of DPC's heavyweights and have managed to adjust your style sufficiently (yet still be happy with it) to reap some ribbons and hm's. When, after a 'good run' of scores, you get something that doesn't resonate score-wise, you are clever enough to ask for feedback but then seem dreadfully upset when people give their honest opinion. You weren't (aren't being) 'lowballed'. You also got 1 x 10, 4 x 9 and 10 x 8's - are these 'highballed' votes? Sometimes we all just have to realise that we've made a swing and a miss. By the way, you managed to place in the top 26 24%. I wouldn't call that a bad effort, regardless of score.
In a very Aussie way I'd like to say (and please please take it in a very Aussie way) 'stop whinging'. Take a teaspoon of cement and harden up! :) |

Hey, no prob, and vultures are scavengers along with coyotes etc. So I can see em enjoying the Big Appleès leavings.
And you would be amazed what you can see winging its way over a city. Last October I was visiting Red at work and we were standing in the lot at the back of the store when we both saw a large dark bird slowly winging its way towards us. Going by the sheer size and commonality of them, I though Great Blue Heron. But as it got closer we could see it wasnèt a GBH...then we saw the white head and tail bracketing a solid black body and big plank-straight wings. Yep, it was an adult Bald Eagle, calmly flying up towards the Ottawa River.
And in cities like NYC surely are some peregrine nesting and hatching sites, you never know! |

Northern California Peregrine cam sites
I was taught that the easiest way to tell the difference between hawks and vultures is that, in most cases, the vultures' wings slope upwards from the "shoulder" (forming a shallow "V" shape), while hawks' wings are deployed horizontally with just a slight upwards curve of the feathers at the very tip.
If you see more than two birds circling around together they are almost certainly vultures, and there's probably something dead (or nearly so) nearby ... |

When a turkey vulture is in flight it looks like a bird inside a bird.
When the dark feathers turn to light from the underside. |

I gave it a 6. I loved the poses, but subtracted a bit for the processing, which I find a little treacly.

Maybe I got blinders on, but I don't see anything wrong with anything I've mentioned in this thread. |
Your writing style is very unpleasant, you look down on people. I even dislike getting positive feedback from you! |

Some hawks (I think Cooper's and Harris) have lighter-colored feathers on the underside of the wings, but are not as translucent, and the wing ends are more rounded. |

All's good, I do appreciate all the feedback, I know where I went wrong, and I do admit I over PP some photo's.
Cheers

With respect to processing, was this overdone or not done enough? Our was it something else entirely? I actually was trying for a solid 6+ score.

IMHO, the processing works great for the pier and and clouds, but not so hot for the water. My 2c... for the record, I gave it a 6. |

To be honest, I like the processing. The only thing that struck me was that it seemed a little over-sharpened. Everything seems a little too "crisp" in an unnatural way. |

I gave it a 6. I thought it was lovely, if maybe not crazy exciting. I like the processing, but I generally prefer a lightly processed look, and this image might have needed more to get the score up. Maybe adding a rusty boat or a lighthouse would have helped the score some. |
