According to the warden in the Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne, "Up and vanished like a fart in the wind..."
a fitting metaphor I suppose, but it would be an even greater title for Venser's shot! Remember, Shoot Happens! |

My intention in starting this thread was to help awareness and encourage members to enter the challenge. Venser's ideas are not appropriate. He's self-centered... a megalomaniac. He's entitled to do whatever he wants, but as you see, he's making sure everyone knows what he's going to do.
What's important is the challenge description, which states, "This challenge is specifically intended to be about "wind" like a breeze that blows, not about alternate meanings of wind like "wind the clock" or anything else. Your task is to try to capture this invisible but always-present phenomenon."
Alternate meanings of wind are not welcome, nor appreciated. The challenge description is mighty wide, as it stands. Just review the wide range of interpretations in Wind I or II. Venser is simply trying to be a disruption and an annoyance. In that regard, he's doing a good job. Since the SC is not helping to moderate the forums, I'll fight a lot harder against his subversive personality. So, Giles, advise your friend to cool it. |
Wind as in moving air and wind as in "wind the clock" are heteronyms. The second meaning was eliminated in the description. The first is open. Farting as in "breaking wind" is not precluded in the challenge definition.
You are, of course free to put a basin on your head, mount up your cyber-Rocinante and tilt at online windmills as the self appointed challenge police. Venser and anyone else are free to discuss the breaking of the wind as it is entirely within the context of this challenge despite your misgivings about farts. |

Got these two definitions from Dictionary.com. The first is 'wind' as a noun, the second is 'wind' as a verb. From the challenge description, the verb form seems to be out of bounds for this challenge, while many in the first seem accepted. Funny enough, on the same page as these definitions was the following idiom: break wind, to expel gas from the stomach and bowels through the anus., and it fell under the noun definition of wind.
wind1
1. air in natural motion, as that moving horizontally at any velocity along the earth's surface: A gentle wind blew through the valley. High winds were forecast.
2. a gale; storm; hurricane.
3. any stream of air, as that produced by a bellows or fan.
4. air that is blown or forced to produce a musical sound in singing or playing an instrument.
5. wind instrument.
6. wind instruments collectively.
7. the winds, the members of an orchestra or band who play the wind instruments.
8. breath or breathing: to catch one's wind.
9. the power of breathing freely, as during continued exertion.
10. any influential force or trend: strong winds of public opinion.
11. a hint or intimation: to catch wind of a stock split.
12. air carrying an animal's odor or scent.
13. solar wind.
14. empty talk; mere words.
15. vanity; conceitedness.
16. gas generated in the stomach and intestines.
17. Boxing Slang . the pit of the stomach where a blow may cause a temporary shortness of breath; solar plexus.
18. any direction of the compass.
19. a state of unconcern, recklessness, or abandon: to throw all caution to the winds.
wind2 [wahynd]
1. to change direction; bend; turn; take a frequently bending course; meander: The river winds through the forest.
2. to have a circular or spiral course or direction.
3. to coil or twine about something: The ivy winds around the house.
4. to proceed circuitously or indirectly.
5. to undergo winding or winding up.
6. to be twisted or warped, as a board.

Discussing what people should or shouldn't enter before a challenge is as bad as discussing them once voting starts. Let people enter whatever photo they want that meets the despcription of a specific challenge, even if that means 100+ photos of bent trees. You live in a democracy; embrace it.
If people want to take free study photos, there's a challenge for that too. |

I was talking more about the part "advocating voters are too narrow minded". Because I saw Hahn writing that numerous times and I agree with that. We should allow free interpretation of the subject. If someone thinks something is a DNMC picture they will vote accordingly. Unless Hahn thinks the rule applies only to his pictures not to Venser's (it kind of looked like it). |

I was sitting at my kitchen table this morning watching the squirrel who rips up my trash on a regular basis (though there is never any food in it and I think he just likes making a mess) walk across the fence to the cans when a gust of wind knocked him off. First I cracked up laughing, then I wished I'd had my camera handy. Maybe next time. ;D |

*sigh* seems that everyone is getting the wind up their tails over this challenge.
I have no plans to enter, feeling uninspired and slightly under the weather to boot, but I will make a magickal snaffles prediction about the entries:
1) there will be birds and probably planes in flight;
2) there will be flags and or banners, signs, hoardings etc flapping;
3) there will be dust, smoke, clouds, vapour, mist etc hopefully scenically framing the subject;
4) there will be bent-over trees;
5) there will be storm-tossed waves;
6) there will be at least one windfarm; and
7) Hair. Oh yes, there will be hair - animal, human - being lifted and blown about, either by real wind or a heavy-duty fan or hairdryer; and
8) the challenge will be won with a long-exposure sunset shot on a rocky scenic misty shoreline, probably shot in Iceland but not necessarily. |
