We continue to be in the grasp of an extreme drought. Some of you will remember the wildfires of 2012. Unless things change course, we will face serious problems in the coming season. Of course, it's too early to panic. And, a lot can change between now and June. However, the snow has been sparse east of the continental divide. It's the snowpack in the mountains which is so crucial. We are at about 49% of average snowpack.
This chart shows the deficit and the trend vs. previous years and average.
Pray for big snow. |

As a runner, I loved the 15C over the weekend here in Toronto, as an environmentalist, it astounds me people aren't more concerned. I remember growing up and there'd be over a meter of snow at the beginning of November.
edit - I can access the article, but some may not be able to, the fastest rising pollution is exhaust from idling cars.

We should be hip deep in snow by now. There isn't enough snow to snowshoe. |

There was some good snow up on Berthoud Pass a week ago. But I agree, we need more. |

Slightly off topic to Richard's post, but if people are interested in this, a really good book on industrialism and the environment is The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken.

I think the general consensus is that there is a general warming trend underway. The driving force behind that trend is in dispute.
I would like to see more snow as well, good thing all the ski areas around here (western NY) have snow making equipment. Even with it they are having trouble getting enough snow made as the temps haven't been getting and staying cold enough. |

Ergo a massive push for more fuel efficencient cars, I drive a Nissan navara pickup truck think you call it a frontera but I'm getting 33.6 mpg for a large (by European) standards truck.
USA is one of the biggest polluters out there when I was there skiing in mammoth few years ago all the huge pickups where chucking out about 8mpg from a 6.6 litre monster engines. |

Not sure about that one my friend... I seem to recall that they have made massive strides over the years and even my old truck gets better mileage than that.

Yup, we are {5,461,014,000 tons of CO2 per year). Right behind China(7,031,916,000 tons of CO2 per year), just ahead of the EU (4,177,817,000 tons of CO2 per year). However even the biggest full size four door super cab extended bed dual axle V8 monster pickup gets closer to 20 MPG these days. But only because our government makes us. |

Everything is cyclical in nature this isn't the first time there was a drought and it won't be the last.

Yeah we are in the process of having an ice storm...They have already closed some bridges and roads. I hope that I can get home from work this afternoon. Louisiana is not set up for ice and snow..even though we do get it occationally.

True enough. But, tell that to the residents of the front range whose water may be shut off if the snows don't turn on. We have enough water to last to the 4th of July. In Colorado, whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting. |
