I'm not a fan of minimal editing, but I think this is one challenge where it would have been a good idea. I hope we're not going to see a lot of selective desaturation.

First Explosion - 239 entries - 2006
Second Explosion - 283 entries - 2007
Third explosion - 143 entries - 2011
This steady decline in participants doesn't worry any one?

Sadly it has been a trend for at least last six months... may be a reflection of the general mood of photo-artsy people around the world, or a large cohort of people that joined around the same time have decided to leave
Ok, begin the flaming rant... we all know it is lurking out there waiting to burst forth (you know who ou are!). ;-) |

Any time a business (and if you are selling something its a business) loses large quantities of customers they need to look at why. |

Not reading 19 pages of complaints which clearly no one has followed through on to institute changes. Not my problem actually. All I know is that for a new comer there is an observable decline in entries, and after voting on a few challenges there is an observable pattern to the type of photo that is preferred which is why I will not be coughing up any money to join as there is little or no point in joining a site whose members clearly have such a fundamental difference in what they like to what I like. Every once in a while I may participate in the open challenge if it appeals to me just for the personal challenge. |

Does every thread need to turn unto a rant about how people feel about the site? Maybe that is part of the problem! I just wanted to see past winners and get a feel for the challenge not listen to belly aching from people who know everything.
Enough of my rant, interesting to see how simple flower shots seem to do well but have evolved to add more interest. |

not really. people are people every where and this forum is no different to any other. I was hoping to find a better fit than I have but such is life. My style doesn't fit. So what? It happens.

Two challenges are enough to understand it?
I don't know how you can complain... yes there's a decline but for me DPC is still alive and everyone can learn a lot of things here. |

It's that not a still fits or doesn't fit. This is, by natural of votes, the court of popular appeal, at least for determining who wins. But if you watch the site over a period of time, it's so much more than that. That's why there are comments, to give people the chance to say what appeals to them personally, the posthumous thread, which appeals to the more abstract, the different challenge types abstract, expert, architecture, nature, b&w, and all the combinations therein.
You don't have to look far to see the unexpected. There is something for everyone, and a lot of room for growth regardless of your style. It doesn't all boil down to a number, unless that's all that you look at.
Personal growth is the biggest thing you can get from this site -- and that comes simply from going out and trying. Regardless of what it is that you try. It's the experience that makes all the difference.

1. Yes it doesn't take being a genius to see that 2/3 years ago there were 3 times as many entries than at present. Ipso facto there has been a decline in members
2. It equally doesn't take being a genius to look through various past challenges as well as observing that the photos I like do badly and the photos I hated do well on the challenges I did vote on. When a photo I gave a very low score wins there is a huge difference in preferences.
3. I'm not ranting - I merely made an observation. If other people want to get their knickers in a twist about it. I don't care.
4. It is absolutely a matter of fit. Unless I conform my photography (you would probably call it "improving") to the preferred style on this forum I will never win any challenges. That isn't rocket science either. But as I do not and will not take dark disturbing images of weird people that isn't going to happen.
