Has anybody used this lens? It is only slightly more that the Sigma 70-300MM 4-5.6 APO mACRO super II.
Anyone know which would be the best buy? |

I own the Sigma 70-300MM 4-5.6 APO macro super II, and absolutely adore it.. if the 28-300mm isn't that much more, I think I'd go with it, if only for the increased range. It wasn't available where I bought the 70-300mm.
Sigma makes great lenses for the price, that's for darned sure.
P.S. I use mine on a Pentax SuperProgram SLR.. and one day hope to use it on a Pentax *ist D. Whee! |

I belive the 28-300 is somewhat lower quality than the 70-300. Such a huge zoom range (over 10x) will always reduce quality, unfortunately.
Check out Fred Miranda Reviews, which gives a good idea of its quality.
I'm considering the Tamron 28-300 XR just for travel use, which is supposed to be better quality, although still not fantastic.
Edit: Fixed my grammar. :)

I did think that you may get a drop in quality. I already have the 70-300mm. I am very happy with it also. My friend is trying to decide between the 2. The increase range and F numbers does seem to be a big bonus.
Does anybody have any pictures from this lens? If so, could you post some? I think it would be a good one to go for if the quality is nearly as good.
Thanks for your help. |

I have some in my port. I know the tree, the log, the guy from the freedom challenge, the chipmonk and maybe a couple others were taken with it. I never use it at 300 even on a tripod. Seems to be soft at that range and I don't have a good tripod head to hold the extra weight. It is a fun lens for general purpose use that can give sharp pictures if you have enough light. The chipmonk was taken in the shade at 5.6 at 1/45 second hand held, 280mm, iso 200. It's full frame except the bit I took off on top to change the aspect ratio.
Oops. Wrong lens. It's the 28/300 aspeherical if. Sorry.

I have the 28-200 Sigma and it is my favorite lens. I also did have the Tamron 28-300 XR and didn't like it...traded it for a 75-300 Canon lens. |
