(however, it is heartening to see over 100 entries in the "cliches and sayings challenge" instead of 30 and 40 for the expert level challenges recently.)
The way I see it, there are two types of ways, at least, to learn here. Firstly, the technicals- "shallow depth of focus, a certain technique, etc. But thats only one way, there is also the creative side of learning photography- where the fancy equipment only yields soulless stock photography-as technically perfect as it may be- people can learn from all types of challenges. |
So, you're actually equating the challenge topic to how creative people are? Really?
So, if the challenge is say: Shallow DOF, you basically think every photo will be a soulless stock photo?
Perhaps we will just have to agree to disagree, because I can't even imagine how you came up with this. |

I don't see this at all. Literally, you could have shot anything and I could fit it into the cliche or Beatles challenges. I don't see how creativity flourishes with these catchall topics.
You want creativity, make the topic restrictive and see how people differentiate themselves from the masses, not the other way around.

I am not equating the challenge topic to how creative people are- I am saying there are those who need to be challenged technically, and those who need to be challenged creatively, topically- thematically.
I happen to need both, so I like all types of challenges.

I see your point- a free study is a free study, (so much choice that creativity is not put to the test) and perhaps I am being selfish because I would rather vote on and view looser topics.

I'd never watched a Monty Python anything before the Monty Python challenge. But, I did enjoy the research and ended up with a RIBBON for my efforts.
Try new stuff... :D

not sure what this means but its a great expression |
It's a reference to "Are you high on marijuana? Maybe crack cocaine? Whatever you're smoking, dude, it's giving you crazy thoughts..." |
Or in an earlier century it might have been opium (having "pipe dreams") ... and then there were the origianl Assassins — an elite corp supposedly prepped for action with liberal amounts of hashish ... |

Wouldn't you have to be stoned to go on a "suicidal" mission ...? |
