Me thinks Mike considers challenges like "Princess Bride" and "Beatles Lyrics" to be nothing more than glorified free studies. But I think these are fun challenges, especially when folks specifically shoot FOR the challenge.
Good luck and I can't wait to see what all you talented photogs produce. |

Not so much when you've never heard of that series/movie/whatever. |

My commis hasn't ever heard of the Beatles... For example. But I think they're interesting (the challenges, not the Beatles) if you can get creative and not fall into the boring syndrome |

They kind of are. Almost anything you shoot I can place in the Beatles challenge. Same with the cliches challenge. At least that one won't be like the euphemisms challenge from a while back were over half the entries weren't even euphemisms. |

For us to have a healthy variety of challenges, we have to accept that not all challenges suits all of us. It's not mandatory to participate in all of them if you either don't know what the topic means (google is your friend!) or seasons, landscape etc. doesn't do you any favors. |

It is a chance to do some research, and to learn something new. You might even enjoy the "Princess Bride" or the "Beatles". Or whatever... |

Actually, then they're even more fun. I've enjoyed challenges where I had no clue what was going on, and I explored something I hadn't before.

I know The Beatles of course...
and I did some research on that old princess and viewed some scenes; actually I didn't find it inspiring or amusing, but rather ...old.

It is really not a movie to understand the charm without seeing it from start to finish, and I guess to those who have never seen it first while younger, it does come across as a bit old and dated. But the same could be said for many classic cult films. I guess you just had to 'be there'....
And from watching a few clips you would never find out that the movie has nothing to do with the Princess, Indigo, and the rest of the crew in the story.

It's a reference to "Are you high on marijuana? Maybe crack cocaine? Whatever you're smoking, dude, it's giving you crazy thoughts..." |

We have had quite a few challenges with references to popular entertainment or idioms. Learning about them is nice. But I'm not sure how watching the Princess Bride of reviewing the Beatles catalog for potential titles will improve my shooting.
We haven't had a tribute challenge in ages, either to another member of a famous photographer. Shaping your style towards that of another is a challenge and learning stylistic essentials of a different way of working is actually something that you can use in your day to day shooting. Can we get one of them before we have another pop culture naming challenge?
Title challenges can be fun, but the modified free studies have to be balanced out with subject based and technically based challenges. |

I agree that these are highly specific challenges, and a broader range of "free study" would be nice.
(however, it is heartening to see over 100 entries in the "cliches and sayings challenge" instead of 30 and 40 for the expert level challenges recently.)
The way I see it, there are two types of ways, at least, to learn here. Firstly, the technicals- "shallow depth of focus, a certain technique, etc. But thats only one way, there is also the creative side of learning photography- where the fancy equipment only yields soulless stock photography-as technically perfect as it may be- people can learn from all types of challenges. |
