Take a self portrait but disguise yourself so that you are not recognizable. No masks allowed.
Oh and minimal editing :) |

so basically the challenge is "take a photo of ANYBODY being unidentifiable in an other way than through wearing a mask".
Two facts make the essence of a self-portrait: it gives away (or ar the least, hints at) the identity of the portrayed person and it is taken by the same. Both are not necessary because impossible to assess by the viewer (and, in case, by SC) in such a challenge. Shoehorners paradise.

I agree that it is a shoehorner's paradise. And I know that there's been blatant "cheating" as far as challenges go (47 steps, one of the lighting challenges, etc). I put cheating in quotes, because there's a huge difference between completely going against the description of the challenge to get something better than you would have otherwise, and simply being "out of the box").
But I still believe that the vast majority of people go by the description or the feel of the challenge for the more out of the box types.
It's a difficult challenge. There are many techniques that you probably won't be able to use that you might consider if you were shooting someone else (zoom and rotate comes to mind). So there's a real challenge here on how to do this.
Just because a few might ignore the whole point of the challenge, doesn't mean the rest of us couldn't have a lot of fun trying to figure out how to do this.
Just make sure the challenge description explicitly states self portrait. A few challenge topics have been a little confusing. "My buddy and me" was a little confusing to people whether it had to be a self portrait or not. You + 1 was much more straightforward.
I think it's an interesting idea -- and I hate self portraits!

I'll give everybody I recognize a 1. And I give every image a 1 where no face is visible. |

Not recognizable as "not in the same style as to give it away" or
Not a recognizable face?
I'm guessing we will still might recognize a few entrants, .and that's ok. |

I have a few ideas swimming around my head for this challenge.
now... how to actually set up for it and get it right... that's the hard part.

I don't see how this one is a shoehorner's paradise anymore compared to Beatles, Cliches, Off Centered Subjects, Backlighting, ...
It seems about par for the course here. I guess I don't see how people can complain about this being a shoehorn showdown when approximately 50% of the challenges fit the description. |

I'm thinking that maybe you misunderstood my meaning, since you only quoted that part of the post. I wasn't complaining that it's a shoehorn challenge -- I was agreeing that it was a shoehorner's dream type challenge, and this is why:
It's a shoehorner's paradise in that you'd wouldn't be able to tell if it's a shoehorn or not (just like you probably can't tell if it's even a person or not in some cases). Just like the 47 steps challenge. Some people may think that they can go do anything they want, because there's no way of telling whether they followed the definition of the challenge.
However, I went on to say that I think the vast majority of the people will follow the challenge -- because that's what's interesting about this one. Trying to do a self portrait that's unrecognizable.

Ha! Facial recognition, correct? What if Bear moons us again?

Well... it's possible that it's still recognizable, and gets a one because of it. :P

I agree with this line of reasoning. |
