I was going to buy the Canon 550ex this next week, with birthday money. But should I wait?
//www.dpreview.com/news/0408/04081907canon_efs_flash.asp#speedlite
Does ANYONE know when this comes out? BestBuy has no info on the product or when it will come out... if any of you know, let me know!

I'd wait Arie. Chances are the 550EX will get cheaper with the arrival of the 580EX. But then the 550EX is plenty flash for most users...

Quite true! I will wait. I think the 580ex looks cool. I see tons of buttons to push. I like gadgets!

Just take note of the "estimated selling price" for the new 580EX:
Canon's new Speedlite 580EX flash and Compact Battery Pack CP-E3 will be available in October for estimated selling prices of $479* and $220*, respectively.
Sounds to me like when it first hits the streets that it might be quite a bit more expensive than the 550EX currently sells for... something to think about.

From the press release:
The Speedlite 580EX flash takes its place as Canon's new flagship Speedlite, replacing the popular Speedlite 550EX model.
Emphasis is mine. I take it from this that the 550EX will be discontinued. For my money, I'll buy the 580. I really like the feature set.

..this might push the price of the 550EX down...I mean the 550EX is still a VERY good capable flash...heh heh heh...can't wait to get my hands on a 2nd unit...

It could also be read that the 580EX is taking the place of the 550EX as the flagship of Canon's Speedlite line-up, implying that the 550EX will continue to be around for those who can't take advatnage of some of the extra features (i.e., film shooters, those with old digital bodies)... the 550EX just won't be the "king of the hill" any more.

Even if it costs $150 more? The US-warranteed 550EX currently sells for $330 at B&H... although I can see a desire to have the latest, it is only crop-factor aware on newer Canon bodies. Yes, it is a little lighter and faster recycling, but not sure if the benefits are worth $150 unless you have one of the supported bodies. Or am I the only one who sees it that way?

Nope, I see it that way too! The 550EX far exceeds what I do with it...so if the price goes down for the 550EX, I'm there for a second one! :) Not that it wouldn't be nice to have the 580EX...

I would like to have a second 550 also to go with the 420 and the 550 i have now. The advantages it lists aren't worth any money to me.

I decided to get the 580ex. I got my birthday money today from dad! Haha... I'll just add quite a bit of my own money to it and viola, I'll have a great flash in October! Yay!!!!
I don't own any external flashes, so this will be my 1st. I am excited about learning every single feature on it! I am excited. Anyone know where I can preorder one?

I think EddyG has got it right. If you are planning on using it with a 10D or a Rebel, think about it like this- the 550 was top of the line when your camera was introduced; by the time the 580 comes to market Canon will have added two newer DSLR bodies to it's line-up (the 1D Mark II and the upcoming 20D) and the new flash is probably being issued to take full advantage of features in those two new models rather than the earlier ones. It will be nice to see the 550 sell for a little less if it's not discontinued (perhaps to use as a slave to the 580). |

I wonder if all the features of the 580ex will work with my 10D. I should go read up on that. I do want a flash I can grow with, but I don't really want one that has funtions that I can't use. Any suggestions as to the best place to learn about this is?

Arie the 580EX will work fine with your 10D except that you won't be able to use the E-TTL II feature and the sensor size detection. I mean if you are looking for a first flash that will stay with you for a while I say by any means go with the 580EX, but the 550EX is plenty flash IMHO

The Vivitar 285 is about $75. No TTL nothing, manual power setting. Works great if you spend the time to learn how to use it, but definitely not plug & play like the Canon E-TTL units.

Yesterday, I put in my order for the 580ex. However, are there any "really great" accessories that I 'need' to get with it? I know some of you use a sync cord, though I am not sure what it's mostly used for since I have almost no experience with flash photography. Is it good to have extra batteries for a few hours of shooting or should the batteries last for 4 hours? Do most of you have back up batteries or are happy with just having the one?
Thanks,
Arie
