I love gear, all of it. I would love to have money to buy everything and play with it all. BUT, I'm not rich so I have to save my pennies (Yen) and buy carefully. I was thinking about what was important to me as far as camera bodies are concerned. Here are a couple of things that make or break a camera purchase for me:
Must have:
Good in low light (ISO related)
ISO, WB etc...buttons on the body (Not in the menus)
CF cards slot (Since I have so many now...but I will be buying some SD cards)
Video function (DSLR video is something I'm very into and will continue to try and get better at until I get myself a pro camera and the balls to ask my wife to buy that camera)
I don't need a full-frame, although having one would be nice. I'm always keen on better ISO performance, thus my drooling over the 1Dx. Video functions are getting better and better and that also makes me want to upgrade. Having 10fps comes in handy but I've actually used the burst mode only a handful of times. I could get away with 4-6...I think. There's a lot I would love to see in the cameras, but it would add to the cost and so I could live without (Wifi being one of them).
Anyways, what's your list look like?

I'd have to say that of all the users on here, you're one who partakes in upgrades and swaps more than most everybody else.
For me personally-
-Ergonomics (feel, control, balance). Coupled with this is a near dealbreaker if the camera has scene modes on dedicated buttons. It's a feature I never use and it means buttons I do use are then hidden in menus. The buttons must be spread out a bit and preferably able to be operated with gloved hands, since I often shoot in the cold.
-Robustness of body & durability of components (like shutter, for instance)
-ISO performance (I shoot mostly handheld)
-Cost of unnecessary features for me (how many things am I left paying for that I have no interest/use in, and how much of the total price does that constitute)
-CLS integration/pop up flash (this is important to me because if it doesn't have it, it means I'm forced to carry more gear if I intend to use off camera flash, which it isn't terribly unusual for me to bring on a climb or a backpacking trip)

*shrug*
I am kinda all over the map. For me, it depends on what purpose I intend for the camera to serve.
Having just bought an old Canon S10, I can tell you my reasons were as follows: Nostalgia
But my purchase decision for the most recent SLR purchase was the desire for a full frame camera, for the bokeh and noise characteristics, and of course the value of getting a 5D with grip for $800 was irresistible.
I bought a Canon D60 a few months ago, which I picked up because it's an amazingly nice body even if it is only 6MP. Shutter sounds like a 1 Series body.... So, I'm not even sure why I bought this, but it was a good deal on a neat body, and my buddy didn't really want it, so it was gathering dust in a closet.
Of course, I am kinda in the market for a film body, the characteristics that I want there are simple: EOS and fully functional. (my current 35mm EOS body's mode dial is disconnected/loose/screwy/wonky)... I suppose my reason for this is the fact that I enjoy shooting the occasional bit of film, and having a good EOS body is a fun way to do so, given that I already have glass to cover the system.
So, as you can see, I buy cameras for all kinds of reasons, and I'm even prone to some silly purchases as well. However, I do think there are some constants between all of my purchases:
Durable body quality - you won't find any plastic goodness in my collection, outside of that 80-200mm and the 50 1.8..
Quality optics - I have a few lenses I just don't even use any more because I am addicted to great glass. I like fast Canon brand stuff, and I'm intending on increasing my L collection, plus I prefer IS, it's a real nice treat to do long exposures hand-held.
Battery/Card compatibility - all of my SLR bodies (with the exception of the film body) use the same batteries, I am very happy about the fact the D60, the 20D, the 50D and the 5D all use the same batteries, and of course, the same CF cards as well.
In the case of compact cameras I like metal bodies and compact designs, preferably with IS and faster glass, and it must use CF or SD, no strange memory types for me.
..
As for my dreams? Yeah, 1Dx, of course, that's sweet. Actually, I want the 1Dx MkII, but I might have to wait a while. ;) |

them i'm a close second :)
i have a serious itch to go fullframe, otherwise im perfectly content with my 60D. i have more of a glass fetish than anything.
Image quality matters to me more than anything.
performance in low light is especially important to me.
everything else is just gravy.

| At the moment---> lack of money, but I have to say I am really content at the moment. I have access to two micro 4/3rds cameras and various wonderful lenses. The GH2 for video work, and I've yet to master all of this camera and it's abilities...so much fun taking and editing video! I also have access to the Olympus OMD-5 which is an amazing little camera. Both cameras are smaller....easy to pack and use, and allow me to be more in situations and less of an observer with a camera. I love these cameras for that aspect alone! I can find fun cheap wonderful glass at thrift stores to play with too. The OMD-5 has a 5 axis stabilization system which allows for handheld shots in really low light situations and coupled with a fast lens it is amazing! Also, when taking video without a tripod it stabilizes the footage...making it perfect for those in the moment vacation films, etc.. I can actually say I'm really content and happy, and if I had extra funds I would use them to pay for a fantastic vacation to use the cameras!! |
