Seems google is giving Picasa away free here

This is the same management software you get from Ritz - it isn't terrible.

yeah, it's been available for a while (since july at least). it's fun and very fast, but i haven't played with it too much (file format support is limited and not extensible from what i can tell).

Picasa 2 now available.

Looks like it supports many more file types now, including RAW and TIFF files... excellent!

Picassa 2.0 was recently given an Editors Choice Award by PC Magazine. The review is here: //www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1752153,00.asp
(I like that it supports a wide variety of formats, has some advanced editing capabilities, and is intuitive!)

It has the easiest-to-use image straightening tool I've seen.

Ya know, I really have not tried any of the editing tools other than the red eye. But I just tried that straightening tool. Very cool.

Ok, I am convinced this is a smooth program! The interface and speed are excellent.

However: On my system, it has trouble with CRWs. I don't know if that's because I have so many different raw tools and they may use the same DLL imaging libraries, or what. But it displays the image sometimes, and then it disappears. Sometimes it garbled. But more times than not, it's not usable. (I have Bibble, BreezeBrowser, Thumbsplus, Photoshop CS, and Photoshop Elements 2 and 3 on this system. And I know several of those use DCRaw and fight for the DLL dominance.)

Do others have trouble with that? (My CRW files are both from my G2 and my dRebel.)

The other thing I don't like is it lists the folders without paths--so I see "processed" lots of times in the tree, seemingly orphaned. "processed" is the name I give to a subfolder with files converted by Bibble to JPG. I'll have to see if there's a way to show full paths in the left pane.

Hello everyone.

I just installed this yesterday and am SOOOO impressed. I had a trial version of Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 and Picasa is so much better. I have already uninstalled APA 2.0 ;)

All the editing features are good (and don't transform the original image unless you want it to). Backup, Emailin, Screensavers, Web albums and much more are some of the things you can do with this program.

The user interface is excellent (the timeline is escecially cool). The "wow factor" is still growing for me :)

And it is FREEEEEEE! Hooooray for Google!

A question for those using Picasa 2...Will it show you thumbnails of photos you have stored somewhere other than the hard drive?

For example if I take my photos and move them to a disk to archive, will Picasa catalogue all of them for me (thumbnails only)?

This would be the primary reason I would use a special 'viewer' program...

I hope my question makes sense...

according to David Pogue, they are equally good... (Picasa2 / iPhoto5)

Mike

I just got Picasso and like it. It pulls images off my CD's and remembers them. I'd suggest naming the CD anf the Picasso folder the same, so you know which CD to insert a year from now.

Perfect, thanks swagman!

Downloading now...

Okay, is it just me or does it not show the folder hierarchy? If that's the case, it's almost unusable as I have a specific way of archiving and organizing my photos (doesn't everybody?)...

Same here. The lack of a folder hierarchy is quite irritating.

Whenever I put an image on hold, I notice that the icon is of the original uneditted/uncropped picture. Hmm...does my computer still have the original uneditted version of my pictures? That'd be really great if I can access them [Especially since I made the mistake of resizing/saving images, so I no longer have the full size image]

Hmmm.. the part I like is you don't need a hierarchy. The program remembers where the image is. If I need to know a location, I can right-click the image for properties.

If it's an issue, perhaps you can use a code for each folder name?

Keep in mind my comment about saving images straight to CD; that way you can't mess them up.
01/23/2005 04:38:04 PM · #20
But I don't want them organized by folder name...I have my photos organized by month, then by photo shoot.

Picasa takes all my photo shoots and lumps them all together (sure, it sorts by year or something, but that's no good).

...also, I won't be able to separate my family snapshots from my portfolio. Of course, I could...but I'd have to label every single photo.

Unless I'm missing something, I can't use this program...

I'm just starting to mess with Picasa, but I think you can create collections within the program to organize, without actually changing the file structure on HDD.

So you could create a collection for family shots and a collections for portfolio work and point the respective folders there.

Again, I just installed this today and am still figuring it out, but I think the above is true. Don't know if it resolves your problem, but it might help, 'cause I'm dealing with the same thing.
01/23/2005 05:02:09 PM · #22
I think you're right, but I don't think I can have subfolders. I can have a family collection and monthly folders of my other shots...but that's it, no folders within the monthly folders, I think...which means all my January 2005 shots are lumped together which is no good.

I just feel like I'm missing something...having subfolders (and sub-subfolders) just seems like a simple no-brainer when organizing your photos...

You could always use collections and keywords to break things up however you want them. (Ctrl+K for keywords, right click to move a folder to a collection/create a new one)

One "problem" with all of these organizing programs is that if you later move/remove photos (like transferring them to a new hard drive) the programs can sometimes get quite "confused."
