could anyone describe these filters in depth? and regarding the D70, how can we better sharpen images; mine seem to be softer than expected. Definately softer than my Coolpix 4300 APS!
any comments welcomed and appreciated.

Aliasing occurs when high frequency effects are essentially downsampled. In 2 dimensional terms, a high frequency is represented by an edge or sharp change in contrast. An anti-aliasing filter avoids sampling issues at these edges by smoothing (or essentially blurring) the image. This improves aliasing issues, but generally leads to a softer image.
As a result, all bayer matrix images pretty much require some level of sharpening in post processing.

As before...you can do it in camera, or in your editing program.
Crank up the sharpening in camera to its highest setting and see if you like it.
or
adjust it in (in my case) Photoshop. I shoot RAW, with most of the camera options OFF and usually try to use a white card (now), then do the color and sharpening on that one and Batch it to the rest in that series. or...Create an action with USM at 85-100%, Pixels-1, Levels-4, and run them through that, or...just do them one at a time to your preference.

For more information on anti-aliasing filters and why most cameras have them, check out this link. There are some cameras that don't have AA filters (or have very weak ones), but that can lead to serious moire issues that can be very difficult to remove. |

thanks everyone... kinda sets me at ease knowing everyone uses editing software for thier images.
BTW DACRAZYRN - I understand what your doing with the batching - taking pics and then color enhancement applied to all from that shoot but what is USM? is it a tool in PS CS?
thanks

USM is unsharp mask. It's like the basic sharpen command but gives you more control. It is available in PS CS :)
