Ditto! I remember subscribing to a mail order club where I would get photos and stuff from NASA and I had a huge collection of Apollo stuff. I also remember watching the moon landing on something like this...

We've come a long way. ...at least in terms of TV technology. ;-)

We ended up watching the landing on TV (on a similar one!) at a hospital somewhere near the Grand Canyon. I had been bitten by a spider/ insect and we were in the emergency room getting it mended. I still remember spending that entire few evenings looking up at the Moon and wondering what it was like up there.

I gotta get a hold of my mom and see if she has any of that stuff stored away somewhere. Could be worth some $$.

Now would be a good time for a challenge with a moon theme!

I agree it would be great to have a Neil Armstrong challenge...

Perhaps a meme-stylechallenge, with Neil "landing" on various places...? After all, SHE showed up on HIS landing (see 8th image)!

A thing I've already done, myself :-) I like the idea of the challenge.

I would just like to point out to all of you who remember watching Neil land on the moon. And what I want to point out is the fact that you all must be very old! :D

Matt

RIP Neil.

Old enough to fart dust, as it were. I was ten. I watched it on a big ol' vacuum-tube-based Heathkit black & white TV that my dad built around 1966. I will never forget that day.

That'd be moondust? I've never forgotten it either, that first step onto the surface. As a youth I'd stare at the stars for HOURS and just absolutely ACHE to get "out there". I was a hard-core SF junkie from the age of 8 or so...

I didn't get to see it live. I was on duty, and listened to it on the radio. I remember going out that night and looking up at the moon and thinking, somewhere there were a couple of guys having the time of all our lives...

I guess you really don't understand the basic premise of his post then do you?

The death of anybody who is significantly in the public eye and linked to historical events seems to create a really tangible marker in our shared timeline - it makes us all aware that we are getting older!

No harm in that I suppose - reminds you there are things to do, a world to see andthat there is pretty much an obligation to enjoy yourself. And to do what you can to help others enjoy themselves too!

I'm another one in the I remember it as if it were yesterday camp. I watched it at my then fiance's house (2 months before we married). He was home sick, I don't know what I was doing there...

Love it!! A moon challenge WAS announced, albeit one without any mention of Neil. Still, a blue moon is pretty cool. Perhaps some clever DPCers will combine the two themes.

That's a great idea, Johanna!

"Someplace" I have some B&W photos I took of the landing off the TV ... :-(

Earlier this morning there was a radio program about this -- audio available later today ...
KQED Forum: Remembering Neil Armstrong:
Guests:
* Bill Barry, NASA chief historian
* James R. Hansen, author of "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong"

NPR's Talk of the Nation program has a rememberance coming up in the next hour ...
