It's in pretty good shape considering it's been in a creek for three years.

Thanks for sharing.

"Comeau said he intends to make a book out of the 581 pictures that spent three years entombed at the bottom of that small Adirondack creek."

Heh... What a fun story... Thanks Spork

Great story! How neat (and encouraging) that the images were recoverable.

I'm thinking there's an idea for a "challenge" here - or maybe even a completely different web site - dpc'ers submit a group of photos to a panel of judges, judges select an entrant's group of photos and post them, "voters" then try to figure out who the pictures belong to, and where they were taken. "Voters" could work individually or in teams.

What an awesome quote: "There was a moment it (the camera) could have belonged to any number of 7 billion people. Then, there was a moment when it belonged to just one."

These lost camera stories, and I can remember at least three in recent years, never cease to amaze me. The fact that the finders often go to great lengths to locate the rightful owners speaks volumes.

oh, I thought you were going to say we should all drop our cameras in running water, then try to recover a photo from the camera card.

1. There are multiple sites devoted to reuniting cameras and owners. Sorry, don't have the links handy.
2. If you put your name/contact info in the Owner field of the EXIF, very little "research" would be required (see below).
3. If you register your warranty with the manufacturer, someone might be able to locate you through the serial number.
4. A long time ago, I read an article (not satire) where they tested several types of memory cards for their resistance to ordinary hazards. As I recall, all of them survived the "washing machine test" while two of them even yielded recoverable images after the "nail to a tree test" ...
