Use soft focus & high key to create an interesting photograph. Title with the first line of your favorite poem or song. Voters guess the song or poem.

I was just kidding- I like some of the titles on your wooden knot shots.

Nice!

My only issue with this is that Soft Focus is SO OFTEN MISUNDERSTOOD!

Right now there's a soft focus challenge in voting elsewhere, and over half the entries aren't even CLOSE to soft-focus.

And blur is not the same as soft focus, missed focus is not the same as soft focus.

Soft focus is solely reserved for images where the highlights bleed out and soften the image, while the dark colors remain unblurred.

Honestly, it's so confusing that even the OP switched terms between the suggestion title and the actual suggestion.

I usually see challenges like this just cause a bunch of voter confusion, where everyone just argues about what is or is not DNMC.

maybe we need a page that gives the challenge description and a definition (like above) before we start voting, so that the voters can make informed votes. we are here to learn right?

This is a learning-through-competition site, right?

Cory I honestly didn't mean to cause a pain in your neck with my challenge description.

None of my challenge suggestions has ever been accepted before, so I was thrilled for about 10 seconds until I saw the protest thread. Then I was depressed. Then I saw something shiny!

To me Blur is the larger category. Anything that isn't sharp fits into it.

To me, soft focus is a particular kind of blur, one that I think would go well with high-key.

blindjustice had a neat idea for a title, so I added that. We have a bunch of poets & writers on this site, I thought they might enjoy exercising that talent. I often process to music & enjoy getting ideas for new music. I know I would enjoy voting on it.

[eta] Many of the masters of blur are in this SC. Check it out!

FWIW, I still like it just as much as I did when I first posted to this thread. I'm very pleased that your suggestion got in, congrats on that, and don't be depressed at all... This isn't somehow something you've done. I put the responsibility elsewhere, so relax, and don't worry about it, you've given me nothing at all to complain about.

Cory, you know I have been there, kinda, when you needed it, cheered you on, defended you, cheered you up when you where at your lowest last year. But as someone that has known you in your up's and down's and sideways positions, you have and are raining on a lot of people's parade dude. It is so negative, so nit picking, it just slightly depressingly annoying, it does not seem like you any more.

You know I have never attacked you, or been mean or really got in to it or been the right royal bitch that I know I can be, dude, I am here for you and I know you know that.

Just chill a little bit and let people have their parade and shine for just a few moments before it gets shit on. Please understand, I am not attacking you right now, I just want a little bit of my old Cory back.

Please, just lighten up a little.

Your friend, Juliet

Lol I know what you mean, story of my life !!

I can never find the right blur when the challenge comes along, it's usually during a SC they occur, Ce la vie!!

Got the blur just not sure about the high key... or I should say, not sure what the voters will say about the high key.

exactly, its all a blur until the challenge requires, and then, tack sharp.

I would guess that you have never used such an item for portraits of older people. The softness can smooth out the minor skin imperfections, and even some of the deeper ones. Hopefully, you will have a look at the entries and see a few that connect with you.
A lot of flowery greeting cards have been sold by being soft focus as well.
My feelings are that the voters aren't going to deal very kindly with the blur and highlights in the challenge entries.
I chose one of about six that I though would work in the challenge though, just to see if I could "get it right". I will be curious to see if it gets any OOF or blown highlights comments.
ETA, For my entry, the title is a total shoehorn. That's not a problem, it just seems sort of a "Hmm, That's a strange rule" kind of thing. I enjoyed shooting for this one, so thanks for getting it started.

well I don't love mine, but that's probably a good thing, b/c most of the shot's I love don't do as well as I'd hoped!

I don't really like mine much at all. It is only because I went to the trouble of trying to create a soft focus effect with cling wrap over my lens and that I really don't know how to produce an effective high-key image that I'm entering this shot with hopefully some helpful critiquing. This could end up getting my personal worst score but I was determined to try this as its way out of my comfort zone.

I apologise now to those who may feel my shot was a waste of their voting time.

I am aware that not everyone
a) reads the challenge description (although how hard can that be, it's usually only a couple of lines...)
or more importantly
b) reads the associated threads

but in an effort to bring it forward, the entire thing reads:

Title Only: High Key Blur
Description: Use soft focus & high key to create an interesting photograph. Title with the first line of your favorite poem or song. Voters guess the song or poem.

...just sayin'

I meant the lens not the technique, I'd rather do it in post than have 1 specific lens that all it can do is soft focus
