Like Wendy said, just "do the deed".

I let the white smoke out of my first Fuji S3, literally saw the finder clouding up, took the lens off and smoke was pouring out of it. I had another one on the way before the first one could get back from the repair shop in NJ. I know how passionate you are about your photography, and like me, not having a camera is an emergency on the same level as not having food. Seeing the way you enjoy shooting with the manual lenses you have, the D7000 would be a great way to go.

If you plan on having the money for sure within 30 days, you can charge it now and pay if off within 30 days with no interest in most cases. If you are seriously thinking about waiting a month, weigh the cost of the interest against the nice pile of grand baby pix you will have, and the joy of holding a new grand baby with one arm and a new camera with the other hand. Getting it now would also give you a little time to get comfortable with the differences in controls before the vacation.

And now for the rest of the story...

Tech looked at it today...while I was talking to him he inserted a battery from his work bench area...camera fired up fine...shot off 40+ pictures. Asked me to bring down my batteries & charger to be cked out. They cked out fine. When he inserted my "old" batteries the camera wouldn't power up. Put the "old batteries" (mine) into another D80 body...fired up fine...

In a nutshell. He said he could repair for $250. It would be guaranteed for 90 Days. Or he could give me $40 as is for the camera...to be used for parts.

Decision: I bought the Nikon D7000 today (manager matched the deal that Shannon found for me (thank you Shannon), with the exception of the 32GB card...).

I kept the older Nikon D80 and I'll eventually have it refurbished...but that will be later...after my solid diet of PB&J....anyone got peanut butter???

Phew...now to get some pictures of that beautiful baby boy!!!

Hoorah Janine! Can't wait to hear about your experience with both your new babies.

By the way, you don't have to have just pb&j, pb & honey is good, too!

The pep talk worked! Go Janine! I'm so happy that the local dealer met the on line price for you. It pays to know who you are dealing with and to have local support.
Where do we send the P&J ? Or is it just "bread" that you need now LOL? Have fun and be amazed at both the photo quality, and the new grand baby!

Maybe you could have bought that used battery off his workbench so you can use both cameras ...

Congrats! I'm sure you'll love it.

My suggestion is to dive into those setting full bore, leave no stone unturned. Practice changing settings while looking through the viewfinder. Remember with settings you can always reset them so just mess around with everything, that's how I figured out my D700 which was quite a bit more intimidating than my old Oly E-30 as I'm sure the D7000 is to the D80.

Most of all have fun and shoot, which I'm sure you will.

well if he could repair it he must have known what was wrong, what was ultimately the problem? was it a bad board or did it require a $250 battery terminal cleaning?

You will be surprised by how long the one battery will run the D7000. I have shot around 1,000 pix with one charge, shooting .jpg, no flash, and mostly manual focus or single focus. I did search out the only place within 100 miles to get a spare battery though since the first shoot with it was a wedding.

Don't be intimidated by the 322 page manual. All you need to know, you already know from your D80. Start there and learn things one or two at a time until you are comfortable.
The metering with the older manual lenses feature is a joy after shooting with them before, and not having metering. The DTTL flash metering works with the older glass too.
The superb video is a perk too.

You may find the "help" (?) button useful when you want to know about a setting or something.
The only thing that I have found that requires watching closely is that the mode dial/wheel on the left top corner can be accidentally turned very easily, so just watch for that if things don't sound or feel right. I set "Manual" for about 3/4 sec shutter speed, to alert me if that accidentally happens and it goes to manual.

You need to see if you can buy the extra D80 battery from the tech, the battery that was on the workbench.

I think he said bad board (I was using the term Motherboard more from MY lack of knowledge). He can fix it now (would have to order part(s) BUT I CHOOSE to wait and have it fixed later when I get to eat more than PB&J (and sometimes honey!! Think banana's would work to...Now I do love applesauce with mine!!!)

So far so good...charging battery and starting to read the manual...it's is very similar to my D80...(on steroids) so I have to just go through the settings and get things the way I like them...

Thank you sooooo much for all your help and advice...(Rick (husband) wasn't too sure about the buy, buy, buy chant...lol)

Think it is time to change the camera on your profile to celebrate the new purchase.

I think you made a good choice. Congrats on getting the D7000. You have a camera that will last you years. Tell your husband it's not like it's going to sit on a shelf like a trophy, it's a tool that you'll use :)

Janine,

One of the first things to do with a D7000 is to check the firmware and update to the latest version if needed. At first my D7000 would randomly decide that it did not have a memory card installed, but the shutter would continue to operate and "take" photos without actually recording them. Firmware update fixed everything.

There is also a forum thread with a discussion on the way files are handled with the 2 memory card slots. I am using my iPod touch, so I cannot post a link. The thread title is "Nikon D7000 slots help" In the Tips, Tricks, and Q&A forum. File handling is different than the D80, so there may be some helpful info there.

Firmware is Software for the Hardware. (Basically- updates for the physical parts and components)

There is a lot about it on line if you google "Nikon Software Update, D7000".
Since you just bought it, the camera store may take care of doing it for you for free if you ask. I need to update the one I use as well.

Do I actually have to install the "ViewNX2" I don't ever use secondary software for my transfers (learned that lesson years ago) I transfer all my files directly from camera to computer...

I should be able to do the update...but I'm not sure if I have to install the ViewNX2 first...did you Waddy?

And my cards that I've got in the camera were formatted for the D80...do I have to re-format them...it doesn't light up in the menu...
