Does Skype count as a phone call? My iPad can do that.

Turns out my phone's camera has a zoom AND I can move the focal point around. It takes forever for it to actually focus if either I or the subject is breathing, but I had no idea I had options other than turning the flash on or off. I learned something today :-). Still hate composing without my eye glued to a viewfinder, but I learned something.

I just discovered last weekend that I also have flash on my camera phone. Zoom was discovered after I had the phone for two months. However, the zoom does create lots of noise on my phone. My phone is generally noisy. I guess noise reduction is allowed in basic editing?

I just realized this is basic. Here's a quick question if anyone knows, my cell phone does tilt shift while shooting (not editing after). Is that legal? I know shooting in b&w or sepia are legal, but the tilt shift causes blur.

So I just taped a rotary phone to my D700, is my camera now legal?

The tilt shift feature is VERY likely a software trick they do. Your original image wouldn't have that feature, so I would assume that this is not legal.

It might be that the zoom is merely a digital zoom, so the end result is the same as though you didn't zoom and then cropped later using software....

No, it is an actual zoom. I have tried mine and got the full size photo even though I zoomed in.

Haven't gotten that far in my experiments. Or dragged out the manual ;-)

The new firmwear upgrade for the 7d looks truly incredible! but the bestt part is the fact that it's now a phone.

Though now I'll really get in trouble when I'm driving down the road and trying to shoot motion blur at the same time - when the cops realize that I'm talking on my camera, too. :(

taking a stab here, but my guess would be it's legal. from the basic editing rules: You may:
use any feature of your camera while photographing your entry, with the exception of combining multiple captures in-camera.

I was just looking at one I took like this today, it appears it wouldn't be legal as there is no exif data. The images taken without this have it though.

Resurrecting a post from a previous cameraphone discussion:

Here's a good example. I was leading a group of hikers in RMNP this morning. I was not able to carry my camera gear. But, I did have my iPhone 3GS with me. The sky developed some wonderful clouds. I used the Camera+ app to capture a scenery image (not the native iPhone camera app). It's not a great image, but I'm glad I had the iPhone along.

I did create a ticket and sent it in to SC or Admin for an opinion as to whether the "master" image would meet validation criteria for any challenge. I'll let you know of any response.

Important SC response to my ticket:

"Unfortunately, the Camera+ app doesn't preserve the complete EXIF, so we can't consider it a valid original. The general rule of thumb is that only the native camera app itself is capable of producing valid originals. Obviously, other apps can be used for the editing stages, just not for the initial capture."

This is now clear.

Now, I have a iPhone 4S, but still assume only the native camera app preserves the exif data required for validation. Also, just a reminder the current challenge is Basic Editing, so that changes things up, too.

Funny that it's this challenge that is tempting to renew my membership.

But I do have the new Nokia 808 which has a beast of a camera integrated within.

I've still got the Tmobile G2 that I used in the last cameraphone challenge. Doesn't have the crystal clarity that the i-thing does, but I think my entry is interesting enough to hold it's own and at least come in with the pack.

\"It\'s the photographer, not the camera\". That\'s the point. At least to me it is.
