Here's a study of his style for those interested.
I've tried to grab shots of his that represent the 'feel' I associate with his work. I also tried to grab shots that I think could score well in this challenge.
Consistencies that I have noticed:
-Stop fetishizing your camera and start fetishizing the material you photograph.
-Love the material so much that you don't want anyone else to see it.
-Photograph the material in order to hide the material, thus revealing yourself. |

LOL, Don, I fear you are right about what will score well.
I suppose I was being an optimist, and hoping that the voters won't be fricken clueless.
And I think your statement in the consistencies bit is probably the most revealing thing said here yet - but I also think most will fail to recognize why.

Glad this thing happened, never had this much fun shooting for a challenge in a very long time, i'll be upset and surprised if mine scores above 4.5.
Yan is always true to his vision, i admire and envy that more than anything.

Good deal.
Just for the record the image I submitted looks nothing like the one's posthumous posted, yet to ME it screams cutout.
To me this challenge is more than just trying to mimic your artistry, it's about the person, the persona, the character even your profile picture.
This is a great challenge.

One more thing in 6 days you'll have 4 ribbons.
One of YOUR images will win a blue, red, yellow, & brown. :) |

I always think of him as wielding an axe, just realized it's probably a wave he's giving, even more dangerous.

:) And THAT is I think the lesson we should all take home here.
Still, I would direct the members to give a chance to that which you seem to enjoy so much. That's the real fun of these types of challenges, they encourage us to try something from a very different perspective - to really try to enter your world as best we can, and show the world what we see when we engage in such a Gedankenexperiment.
For you, I have my suspicions that this is a combination of a sinking sense of horror that we've all misunderstood, and humor/fascination with the variety of mirrors we will show you, reflecting your style in our little mirrors, refracting your motivations and style through our lenses. We're all intrigued with how others see us - this is a rare chance to really see those perceptions made real, and solidified into a series of photos.

After a tall bottle of Rum? |
Cutoffs bottle.....
My attempt at a "cutoff" image. As photogs the world over are want to do.....
I'll blame my camera. My new D7100 would not show the grain I wanted even at
max ISO. I'll have to underexpose and bring the exposure up in CS6. That
should do it. :)
It's really what the mind considers art, mine doesn't. :)
This should be a difficult challenge. Cutoff may win!

Well, he's a Cutout, not a Cutoff, so that may explain something. Or maybe not :-) |

what could be more dangerous than shooting the one you love? I have already imperilled my household by shooting from behind. |

I used a $10 camera. Worked a charm.
It doesn't have ISO, but I did set the sensor Gain to +1.0 - not that it was needed to get noise out of this thing, I just wanted extra noise. :)

I apologize, but only to cutout.
I simply picked his 5 lowest scoring images and the 5 highest scoring images on the site, as a deconstruction of attempts to sum him up while still getting a high score. |

Don, serious question - do you really only have love for the images that place low? I know that's not really true, but sometimes it would seem that way.
I tried to pick the images which I felt best showed the essence of his work, those pieces that I felt really somehow demonstrated, or at least hinted at, how he seems to approach this, which are thematic to his style and bring with them the full force of the imagination and creativity that Jan shows in his work.
I really did spend probably 10 minutes puzzled over your choices of his, trying my very best to see what you saw in them. Honestly, it's a shame you chose to make a joke of it rather than engaging. Sorry, but it's just a little disappointing to me, since I really thought you of all people might serve as an expert guide to the beauty of his work.
