That's why I'm not entering this one. My widest is 28mm. That's not wide in anyone's book and getting a bunch of dnmc votes would just suck. |
I shot mine at 17mm on a 17-200mm kit lens. How can people know, looking at it, that it's at 17mm? I think there's no way you can look at a bunch of shots & pick out the ones that are DNMC for wide-angle (unless of course it's 1:1 macro, which is obvious). After some experimentation, I could get the subject in focus from about 10 in. & I think that type of shot, where the subject is close to the lens, would get nothing but DNMC votes. The more I wonder about this, the more frustrated I get. I have one entered, but I think I'm gonna pull it.
It's almost obvious to me that this challenge is a landscape challenge in disguise. A landscape challenge w/minimal editing rules. At least I won't have to look at a bunch of overcooked skies.
[eta] OK not just landscape. Architecture. A comp where everything is equally far away from the lens.

Don't worry about DNMC voters. I'd actually trust the intelligence of the voters to discern a wide angle of view in the context of distance from subject. Furthermore, if you are using the widest angle lens you have and do a good job of straight-from-the-camera photograpy, at least you will have a sense of accomplishment. |

Well, for now I've entered a 17mm shot on a 1.3 crop body, the challenge description says the widest lens in your bag and that's just silly. Am thinking ultra wide will get the ribbons? |

Agreed. I might go pick up the 400mm/f2.8 tomorrow, and I can assure the widest lens in my bag for the next two weeks will be 400mm.

I'm still not entering. I have come to the realization that, i have no urge to waste my time "getting it right in camera". anyone can poohoo that all they want. lazy? maybe, but i dont have to get it "perfect", nor do i want to. my time is better spent elsewhere.
i have grown weary of entering the challenges lately.
the main reason is that i tend to shoot within the confines of a challenge and my photography outside of dpc suffers since i get bottlenecked into only thinking one way. i often forget that in the real world i am allowed to clone out more than incidental items, i am allowed to add textures and clip art i don't shoot, i can remove and replace my backgrounds. i find that i am spending too much time nitpicking little rules when i should be worrying about the larger picture.
for sometime dpc has been my sole inspiration and i need to get a better grip on photography outside of dpc. i'll still enter on occasion and stick around, i love the community, but i realized that i waste too much effort trying to play by the rules here when i really need to just break them.

Have left my marker in as it was growing on me, the edited version does look much better as my desktop background. No idea how it will score as it is just 17mm and would put my money on a Fisheye or similar grabbing the top spots but am just asking for a 5.9+ :)

Any wide angle shot will meet the challenge. I don't think it's fair (nor legal) to suggest that fisheye distortions should be favored. Not everyone has a fisheye lens, nor wants one. |

well yes, I'm hoping so too and guess my 17mm will look better on the 1.3 crop than a 1.6 crop and hoping voters look at it the same way as with the macro challenge where close up works :) |

The variable you are experiencing is sensor size related. The 17mm lens will cast the same image regardless of the camera body on which it is mounted. The smaller sensor catches less of the image. So, the solution to the dilemma is to adjust your distance from subject(s) to present an image which creates a viewer reaction of... "wide angle". Too distant and detail will be too small. Too close and the viewer reaction may be different than what you expect. |

yup, I understand sensor size, don't want to go into too much detail of course, will just have to wait and see :) |

Crap and more crap! I have been out of touch lately and did not know of this challenge. I just left Denali Natiional Park where I spent two days shooting wildlife and landscapes. Unfortunately I always shoot in RAW and don't waste card space on .jpg. I can't enter any of the dozens of great landscapes I took.
Crap, carp! |

I don't understand all this rant against minimal editing (the same happens with other people for expert editing): if you shoot a nice picture and minimal is not enough for you, after the challenge you can re-edit it using whatever kind of rules you want. Changing the camera settings can help to know how the camera works and let us grow as photographers, even if for the rest of our life we shoot in RAW. I entered a shot I like very and I've already done my editing for the end of the challenge. DPC is still an inspiration for me.
For the ones worried about what is wide-angle: there are wide-angles (starting from 35mm. on a full frame) and ultra wide-angles. It depends on your shot. You can convey the idea of a wide angle with a 35mm. and not doing the same using 10mm.

my rant is that i am experiencing growth in photography outside of DPC, initially i was using DPC as my sole inspiration. I am finding now that i dont need DPC as much. However i want to continue to participate, I love this site and the community but the frustration I experience with uninteresting topics and choices of editing lately leave me yearning your something more.
so, i am desperately trying to hold onto something i enjoy, but growing increasing frustrated with, which is participating in the challenges. I want to enter my best, and if i cant, i dont want to. |

Well, this is a perfect explanation Mike :)
WHat I can say once again is that minimal editing can be a way to improve our skills, but if you don't like it no one can force you to submit something. |
