Around here though... Such a photo would be DNMC yet still ribbon.

I don't think 28mm would make a very good impression. I'm out.

See, MarkA, you are allowed to sharpen - I was pretty sure of it but still half-asleep so didn't want to post prematurely.

Now, are we done whining about Minimal?! I'm a single-capture person so I wasn't very happy with the way Advanced went from being single-capture to allowing up to 10 captures a few years back, but I don't go on and on about it.

Unfortunately no it doesn't help at all, the sharpen feature is NOOOOO where near the same as sharpen in RAW processing software.

And again I repeat I am not whinging lol seriously take a look at my posts they are not whingy at all or not intended to sound that way anyway.

Sorry Mark, didn't mean that you were the one whom imnsho was doing the whinging :-)

.... the widest lens in your bag while taking your picture this week.
What if the widest lens in the bag is 600mm this week? I'm sure it'll get the DNMC vote even though it shouldn't.

Oh I agree and I will happily enter Basic editing, I just think the Minimal is a bit too restrictive - plus images from the 5D3 are very soft from camera and require sharpening in DPP to make them usably sharp, I might mess around with some settings and try and get results ok from camera but as I would rarely if ever use it again I don't see it's really worth the effort ;)

well, remember in Minimal you can:

sharpen your entry using your editing software’s “sharpen” or equivalent option. The use of customizable sharpening tools, such as Unsharp Mask, is not allowed.

so come on... misery loves company! ;-)

I think it might be fun to have weekly challenges with the same topic with Minimal, Basic and Advanced rules, might be a tad hard for the voters but would love to see the ribbons that week.

That is truly an awesome idea. Random rulesets for every challenge. That would make it interesting.
Maybe then, we wouldn't get the 15 expert to every 2 minimal.

For me, this challenge will separate the photographers from the processors.. Maybe im from the old school of thought when i say that i believe photographs shud capture the creativity and the mood (feeling) that the photographer wanted to depict, rather than just the processing skills.

Of course, maybe i just say this coz im not much of an expert in processing.. And not really an expert in photography either (just starting out). However, im quite keen to see what my fellow colleagues came up with for this level playing ground challenge. Also, needless to say, im gonna enter this challenge too:-)

+1... Pretty much sums it up... Applies to any challenge.

There's no such thing as a level playing ground - anywhere.

True that. Never has been. Never will be. Never should be.

+1 goes for any challenge topic or editing rules

Personally, I hate minimum even more than I hate basic, but I'm happy to see a minimal challenge if it makes some of our members happy. That said, it doesn't cost anything to enter, so I might just enter anything. :) Peace.

Minimal checkpoints as I head out this morning:

1. Clean sensor
2. Double bubble level on hot shoe
3. Picture style set to match my subject (sharpness +4, Contrast +1, Saturation +1, Color Tone 0)
4. Quality = RAW & JPG Large Fine
5. Auto White Balance
6. Tripod
7. Mentally aware of 95% view through viewfinder vs. 100% image captured on sensor. (need to check the edges)
8. More coffee
9. Sunscreen 30 spf
10. iPhone charged as redundant backup image capture device

eta:
11. Clean front element of wide angle lens ; )
12. Clean soft grad ND filters (pec pads and eclipse fluid)
13. Remove polarizing filter from camera bag to prevent inadvertant use (I don't want a banded sky today).

Man, I'm having a problem with minimal editing. Did a shoot this morning, and they all need some sort of adjustment. So far, dull, dull, dull.

Out to try again.

+2 ... and like Art says, this applies to any aspect of the challenges. And while the challenge topics may not offer a suitable subject for everyone, I think that we all can benefit in some way by participating under the various rule sets. There is always something to learn or practice.

Thanks for starting this thread. I can read basic, advanced and expert, but somehow I always misses the word "minimal" when a challenge is announced. Main advantage of minimal editing is imho that you don't have to edit very much :) Did entered a nice photo, but I wished I could have cropped it (a very little tiny bit).

I think that lately, everyone is just whining way to much about everything.

Yeah i guess ur right.. Some of u have access to better, more exotic locations. Lol

Jokes apart, what i just meant is that the minimal editing gives us guys (i mean the ones who are no good at processing) a chance to showcase what we have without looking bland among the likes of gyaban.

Completed the successful capture of a JPG wide-angle image. I appreciate the shift of focus to getting everything right (or nearly so) at the moment of image capture. It takes thinking and planning and extra time. (But, time saved on PP.) I found myself saying, "Now I won't be able to fix this in postprocessing, so I need to do X, Y & Z." This emphasis on camera skills pointed out to me how sloppy and dependent I had become on resurrecting slightly flawed images with PP software. My image will not do that well in the challenge, but it was a lot of fun to rediscover some mothballed field techniques.

Aside from liking minimal editing rules or not--How in the world do I know if the shot was taken with a wide-angle lens? I honestly can't figure out how to tell by looking at the shot whether it is DNMC by reason of not using wide-angle lens. If I vote DNMC, which I don't. I'm worried that DNMC voters will judge my shot as DNMC by reason of it not looking like a wide-angle lens shot.

That's why I'm not entering this one. My widest is 28mm. That's not wide in anyone's book and getting a bunch of dnmc votes would just suck.
