I just redownloaded it from the app store then quit the installation immediately. Plus, mountain lion comes out in a week!

Not likely. It will be announced, but I wouldn't expect a release before Aug-Sept.

Say Chris, you say you just downloaded to Lion installer Using the App Store? Could you maybe please check and see if it downloaded to either your download folder or applications folder with the name "Install Mac OSX Lion"?
If you can confirm this, that is the file I need to easily perform a clean install and it will just be a matter of downloading it using a friend's machine running Snow Leopard- if I can find one.

Thanks! -Brent

ETA- Duh! I just realized I can download it again from my Lion machine :P

I already tried that. Unlike other Apps, the Lion Installer either cannot be downloaded again or becomes unavailable after a shirt time. It does not show up for me, but might work for you if it hasn't been too long. Likewise, after you run the installer it will delete itself even from Time Machine backups!

No no I redownloaded. I clicked on lion on the app store and the option was "install"
Downloaded to the application folder I believe and after cancelling out of installation simply clicked on the app and did show package contents.

Yeah, this is kind of crazy Shannon. I was able to start the download for the installer in the App Store, but I can not find it's location? It's still downloading and I will post if I was able to find it (maybe a search?), but for now it seems buried...

Maybe it was because I upgraded under the Up To Date program that was discontinued in February?

Lion Clean Install

Thanks for the link Chris :)
I am still re-downloading the application. But hopefully later on I will be able to get what I want to a thumb drive..
06/05/2012 04:20:55 PM · #36
You can try the 5 finger open swipe gesture (5? 4?) to see all the apps the Ctrl-click the installer and show in finder. I'm on the iPad right now but I'll check on my computer when I get off work.

Okay, thanks to the link Chris provided I was able to get to the needed file in the installer and copy that. So in theory that can be put on a USB thumb drive or a DVD to do a nice clean install. Cool!

I will save doing clean installing for another day, but now I know it is possible :)

I'm running a 2009 MBP, only recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard due to 10.5 going EOL. I'm not too taken by the newer features of Lion, and I don't particularly want to wipe and install clean, so I suspect I'll hold off until Mountain Lion before deciding whether to go 10.7 or 10.8.

I use a usb stick which i made using the lion files from the app store, heres a link to a guide which walks you throught the process, they're all pretty much the same, once you have the usb working you can format the internal disk, make sure you've backed up anything you need to keep tho !

Downloaded and ran Disk Warrior last night. It seems like a good tool to have on hand anyway, so what the heck.

It did its thing and fixed a bunch of stuff along with finding a few items it couldn't fix...hmmmm. Errors associated with my old blackberry and some things associated with MS Office... Still wouldn't boot.

Booted to the recovery disk and tried re-installing Lion over the existing install.

Nope. Still wouldn't boot.

I'm going to make a Lion boot disk tonight, back everything up manually, install the old hard drive, drop the nuke on that and re-install Lion on that. If it boots, then I can be pretty sure the problem is with my HD. If not, the problem is in elsewhere the hardware.

ReDownload OS Lion
Launch the App Store
While holding down the OPTION key, click on the “Purchases” section
You should see “OS X Lion” and “Install” should now be gray and you can click that to re-download Lion (you may have to re-authenticate within the App Store with your Apple ID).

Mine downloaded to the Desktop, then I copied it immediately to an external hard drive, because after you run it, it will delete it. Then I was able to make the bootable USB

Bootable USB

I've determined that the problem is most likely due to a dying HD and not anything to do with Lion. I tried making the Lion bootable USB stick, but the downloaded files were corrupt and wouldn't read/write. I also noticed that some of the animations when moving files, selecting things from the Dock were getting choppy and things were taking even longer with more and more "Rainbow Spinny Wheels". I finally swapped the HD with the original 160GB drive that I'd upgraded. This drive was functioning perfectly in this machine when I swapped it for the 500GB drive 3 or 4 years ago. Once the swap was completed, the Macbook booted right up, no problems.

A new HD will be here tomorrow. Unfortunately, since the old HD is running Leopard, the failed drive is the only one with Lion installed, I've misplaced my Snow Leopard disk and I was unable to create a Lion install disk before things got too unstable, I currently have no direct path to Lion that doesn't involve re-purchasing Snow Leopard.

So Mountain Lion comes out in a month, for those interested I'll be doing a clean install based on the current instructions for Lion. Plus it costs only 20 bucks and is upgradeable from Snow Leopard. I'm currently downloading Aperture 3.3 and from what is written in the description it should be a bit better... though it isn't Aperture 4.

I have a Mid 2010 13" Macbook Pro with an upgrade to Lion - 4GB Ram - No issues.

I have a Macbook Pro Retina on order. Will be here in about 10 days. Will have to upgrade to Mountian Lion for free when available. 16GB Ram should be enough to handle it.

My "regular" Pro will go on ebay to help pay the cost of the new one.

Similar boat here. My MacBook Air 13" with 128GB SSD and 4GB runs real smooth and handles handle Lion with aperture and Ps real well. Eyeballing that retina MacBook pro as well.

My problem is that my favorite and only photo editing program LIGHTZONE which is Java based is not being developed any more. The developer has stopped and is now working for Apple. Lightzone's last version for Mac runs perfectly on my macmini on Snow Leopard but will apparently not run on Lion or Mountain Lion. It wont even run on Snow Leopard if I update to the last version of Java so I am not updating Java. Problem is that if one updates to Lion or Mountain Lion the Java updates automatically too.
Tex Andrews and Doug Pardee have started a website especially to keep LightZone alive called LightZombie and are putting a lot of effort in updating RAW profiles for LightZone. They are running it as a sort of open source project.
Real pity that LightZone was abandoned by it's developer as it is a really fine piece of software with some fantastic features, simplicity, ease of use and straight forwardness not found on any other photo editing software. The Zone system instead of curves especially is fantastic as is the feature whereby you can selectively and in many different ways edit parts of an image. The way the layers works is groundbreaking too and super straight forward. All of this is non-destructive editing too and it has a fantastic RAW converter. In fact you edit straight from the RAW file and convert to Tiff or Jpg or a few other formats it offers. So I guess I will just have to stay on Snow Leopard.
