Hi all,

It's close enough to father's Day that I can likely justify having my kids "buy" me a new camera (as long as it's with my credit card). I'm very happy with my Nikon D3100 for when I'm at home and can carry the weight and lenses... But I travel for work "a lot" and need something easy to slip into a pocket that will still take quality shots. Zoom is kind of important since I don't move very fast anymore (partially disabled)... I can probably go about $350 (USD) without having to sleep in the doghouse, but could go to about $450 if there was something worth some serious angry wife glares...

I've been looking at the Nikon Coolpix P310 and S9300 but am afraid I'm developing a case of "Brand tunnel vision" and am likely overlooking better options... Hence, I ask...

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have a Canon G series (11) and an Olympus EPL-1

I would recommend either though the G series is more portable.

As you know that's a hell of a set of restrictions..... Best I could suggest is the S95 (amazon link with NO refer in it). I'm sure there is a Nikon equal but I don't know it.

Some of the micro4/3 would fit part of it but not the price :-( There was some talk of a Fuji smaller then the X100... is it the X10 maybe but I don't know the price and assume it would be fixed lens or at least less zoom.

Edit: Dunno about glares... but that is $30 over your 350 limit.... so might not be worth it :-)

I have a Canon G11 as well. Probably half my recent challenge entries have been taken with it. Not too big to fit in my jersey pocket while out riding my bike. Nikon has the very similar P7100. You can find one for the "wife glaring" price and maybe you can find a used one for the "wife approved" price.

What's wrong with the Olympus D490Z ...? ;-)

Another option would be the Canon D10 -- not a long zoom, but it's waterproof (about 30ft) and shock-proof (about 5ft) -- good for putting "in your pocket."

Sorry to hear you're not getting around so well. I had bilateral hip surgery about 18 months ago ...

I have the Canon SX 230 HS and find it pretty good for vacation shots and the like. Fits in your pocket, fits your budget and has a decent zoom. I have never found a P&S that I fell in love with as far as IQ goes. Just a problem with the smaller sensors. If you want to break the bank the new Canon G 1X (I think that is it) looks like it may be my next as it has - larger sensor of the DX variety (well a bit smaller but six times a normal P&S).

I keep a little Fuji XP 10 on my belt full time, and it's been super handy.
I like that I don't have to worry about it getting dirty or wet, and I have also tested the 5 ft drop resistance a few times.
It's great for macro, and for copying equipment nameplates, biz cards ect. It's not so hot for night shooting, though I have gotten a few very nice night shots with it.
I'm sure that other brands have a similar model, and by now probably with much better performance.
