My new favorite from the April FS:

The bird isn't physically a big part of the composition but it totally made the scene for me. Sometimes it pays to watch and wait for the perfect moment to capture!

A few others from my portfolio:

I have about a gazillion more bird pictures, many of which haven't made it onto DPC or anyplace else for viewing. I do love birds as a subject ... someday I will go through and get rid of the pictures I will never, ever do anything with. Really ;-)

In downtown Richmond -- right in downtown Richmond -- is the James River.

In the middle of the James River is a great blue heron rookery.

I knew there was a rookery somewhere up there (it's about an hour away), and I finally tracked it down last summer. But you couldn't really see anything because the trees were across the river, the herons were gone, and the trees were all leafed out.

I was told to come back in February.

I did.

The nested in February:

I visited in March. Not much activity on the river. They were still flying around, but the nests couldn't be seen because the trees had leafed out.

(didn't enter either of those shots)

I was told that the shad run in April, and that the GBHs hang around in the river during the fish run.

I went up to Richmond 3 times during April, spending about 4 hours each time. Two times were a bust, but the 1st of the three was incredible!!

About 20 GBHs in the river while I was shooting. They were actually slow catching the fish, but I had some opportunities. However, the osprey were fishing and so were the cormorants. I had never seen the cormorants fishing before!!

This was actually my favorite shot

If I had been able to get a little lower for the shot, it would probably be my favorite shot of all time. I love the difference in size of these birds!

Here are some other shots from that day:

And check out the size of some of the fish!!

a couple more:

Very cool, Wendy! There are several GBH rookeries near me, but I think I'd need a boat to get close enough for a good shot! Preferably piloted by someone who knows how to control a boat ;-)

I haven't had a chance to check out this thread yet - you guys are AWESOME! I'm not much of a bird photog (unless the bird is a pigeon, of course) and I'm not very good at identifying birds other than pigeons, pelicans, and seagulls. Anyway, saw this guy on the pier - he posed very nicely. What is he?

This other strange fellow was shooting him, too:

The Killdeer is nesting in Moraine Park. The male feigns injury to draw attention away from the nest.

Hitchcock should have used these guys in "The Birds"!

... he could have, but the movie would have been much longer since they only eat dead things. :O)

I was on a walk last weekend and came across this heron at a small tarn. I had my landscape lens on, so not ideal, but these heavily cropped photos act as a reminder of a rather wonderful and surprising interruption to the walk.

Wonderful capture, Harvey. I'm in learning and shooting lousy shot. Really admired your knowledge while I don't even know the name of bird I shot -:)
Here is mine

Thanks Alex. Sorry not getting much time atm to post here and follow up. You've got the background right and s/s looks good. Now to wait for the "look" and catchlight and you'll have a winner!
