I saw this man using his cell phone to take a picture while carrying a Canon DSLR on his shoulder.

Needless to say, I was very intrigued and needed some questions answered.

What follows is my impromptu interview:

Me: Good Afternoon Sir. I don't mean to intrude, but do you mind if I ask you a few questions?
Man: I'm sorry, I'm not interested.
Me: I understand, but I am a photographer and writer and I am writing an article for Photo A Day Magazine and I would really appreciate if I could just have a few moments of your time.
Man: Will I be featured in the magazine?
Me: Would you like to be?
Man: It depends on what it is your writing about.
Me: Well It is a photography magazine.
Man: Ok.
Me:So, A moment ago, you were using your cell phone to take a video, I presume?
Man: No, I was taking a picture.
Me: I see, So if you don't mind my asking. Why wouldn't you use your Canon DSLR to take that picture instead of your cell phone? After all, the image quality i'm sure is better on your camera than your phone?
Man: Your right it is, I just wanted to send this picture to my kids and didn't want to wait until later when I get back to my hotel.
Me: Ok, That makes sense. Thanks for your time.
Man: Your welcome. Do you need my name or anything for your article?
Me: Nope. I'm all set.

A few minutes later....

Man: I just Googled Photo A Day Magazine and there's no such thing.
Me: Welcome to New York City.
Have a nice day!

I then just walked off. :)

Many smartphones have an option to use available WiFi connections instead of racking up data charges on a 3G or 4G connection.

I always carry my iPhone 4s with me wherever I go. No, I wouldn't dump my DSLR for an iPhone, but I think the iPhone 4S is a very good camera. I've surprised myself with how many times I've used it to take photos where I wouldn't necessarily impose on people with a DLSR. Wifi connections speed up file transfers if one wants to distribute to others or paste images on facebook. But, 4G cell phone connections are pretty fast, too. I'm beginning to appreciate the iCloud feature as time goes on. Apps, like Snapseed, have made my iPhone 4S a useful mobile camera which does not require me to land at my computer for processing. Note the highest scores of the iPhone 4S in DPChallenges.

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that the cameras on mobile devices have become significantly better but I still thought it was a funny sight to see.

Your image is interesting and maybe important. There is nearly instant gratification from the iPhone capture. Whereas, the DSLR would require a few more steps and minor delay in broadcasting the scene to people who would be interested viewers. With Facetime, one can do a live broadcast of something happening real time. It's the next step beyond Youtube. Hence the scramble for bandwidth.

Eli, you are lucky that you did not get punched squarely in the face. That might have been a popular reaction for such rudeness and utter nonsense. NYC is not that way, actually it never was in my 35 years of going and working there. Most people are much more honest and straightforward, albeit to the point in their mannerisms which some perceive as rudeness. In fact, they are not rude at all, just different. But, misrepresenting yourself and then throwing it the victim's face afterword is not typical nor respectful. The good folks of NYC are good people and stories like this just continues the negative reputation, which is undesired and unwarranted. Ask Mayor Bloomberg who has been fighting this stereotype for the past many years.

Welcome to the real world.

i know why a phone needs wifi, why does a camera? wasn't that the question?

The camera doesn't need the WiFi. The human does.

Lol. Nice ending.

Am I the only one that doesn't really take photos with my camera-phone? The only photos I take with it are things like notes that are on the board in class or something that I need to remember. Other than that I really don't take photos with my phone.

I take photos with my phone constantly for instagram posts and for Facebook.

I usually will take a photo of an area I'm shooting and post it on Facebook and say something like, "I'm in downtown New Orleans taking pics. Check back soon to see the resulting images." Creates a little buzz before I show the actual edited images. Or for the exact reason the guy you asked did. Last time I was in NYC I had my DSLR and also took pictures with my phone to quickly send texts/emails to show friends where I was visiting.

BTW, check my profile page. The camera phone has been good to me!! Wouldn't give it up for nothing.

Because it makes image transfer easy. I use an Eye-Fi card. You can select which images to transfer in the camera and set up the program to upload them to a sharing site.

I think it's funny how the guy immediately Googled "Photo A Day Magazine". Anyway, if I were curious, I would've just asked straight up instead of posing as a reporter. :-D

I've lived and worked in NYC so far as your comment, i suppose you could say there's some truth to it - but not necessarily in a good or common way. I imagine the scenario would have worked out just as well if you'd gone up to the man, introduced yourself as a photographer (truth) and asked the same questions. To each their own i suppose. Interesting bit of information fresh from the mind of a tourist though.

any other reason, besides being open to hacking and picture stealing?

Here's one for you.

I think this is hilarious. Using a camera phone for a fashion shoot & uploading the keeper before you hit the ground. Do you recognize the big video cameras they used to film the shoot?
