I was looking at reviews on extenders, the 2x extender to be exact. Am I right in that on no 1D bodies the, the lens will not auto-focus at anything if it goes being an aperture of f8? I wanted to add some reach to my 70-200 4L, and was wondering about quality at f8...and wondered if with my 1Dm4 if I would be able to go beyond f8.

Officially, the 1-series will focus at f/8, but not beyond. There is a trick for taping certain pins on the lens mount to allow focusing at smaller max apertures. AF may work but will be slow and less reliable.
The newer 2x converters on the 70-200/4 may be a decent combination, but it probably would have to be stopped down 1 stop to be truly sharp; you'd have to test to find out. The combination will work natively on your camera, since the max aperture is f/8. You can still stop down if you wish, it's the max aperture that counts.
