not that most people read the discussion behind challenge suggestions, but see thread here

Some inspiration may be found here

Grunge I

Here is the other challenge that was previously done with this one. Although the new "expert" editing will make this much easier to achieve.

So in reality, this is just about an editing technique...?

Question: I understand that the main picture has to be taken in the specified time period, but a lot of the textures and layers that I use are from pictures I've taken at various times. Can I still use them?

my reading of the rules (and i'm no expert (hehe)) is that textures captured outside the dates are OK, as long as they are not the main feature of the photo.

i'd also be interested to know if textures that come with a software's "grunge" filter would be acceptable to use, as they were neither taken by the submitter or captured/created within the date limits.

any Expert experts want to chime in??

well, in the suggestion thread i stated challenge as

"Select an appropriate subject and post-processing to represent the grunge look/feel."

but since the SC decided to have the challenge description be N/A, all bets are off.

i think there are certain subjects that fit this type of challenge better (old buildings, vintage looking items, faces,... and insects doing the nasty, if the previou Grunge challenge is representative)

Since overlays, textures, etc. are such an integral part of this type of pp'ing, I think the SC needs to weigh in and give a definitive answer as to whether such textures/overlays/etc. need to be taken within the time frame and if they need to be taken by the photog, or can be procured from outside sources.

The relevant parts of the Expert Rule Set would seem to be:

â€Â¢ apply a full range of editing tools to all or part of your entry.

The first point suggests that images used as textures do not need to be taken by you (although you should have permission if they are copyrighted) nor be taken within the challenge submission dates. However, if the "texture" becomes so prominent a feature as to be considered (by a majority of SC reviewing the image) a composite or multiple image, it can still be subject to DQ unless taken by you during the appropriate period.

Bottom line IMO, use textures with caution and discretion, and consider submitting (via Help > Contact Us > Ticket: DPC — General Inquiry) Before/After versions ahead of time for an "informal opinion" (not "pre-validation) from one or more SC members ... a couple of days ahead might be a good idea, especially if everyone's doing it ...

The second point would suggest that a texture filter (an "editing tool") can be used legally.

So lets have the SC chime in on a few of these...

Single image, with an overlay of an envelope. I didn't take the envelope picture. Legal?

Single image, with an overlay of concrete. I didn't take the concrete picture. Legal?

Single image, with bubbles added using photoshop. Legal?

Single image, overlay is using a planet brush. Legal?

eta: one more... Harry's filters on a single image (which just added the colors). Heavy vignette with filterforge.

Someone at one point posted a link to huge library of free use textures. Does anyone know which thread that was, or what the link was?

AFAIK you are welcome to use any of the images in the DPC Textures Library gallery.

assume free to use LEGALLY under Expert if not too prominent/dominant (?)

Sounds like Snapseed might be my tool of choice for this one. I may have to buy the PC version just to see how it differs from the iPad version. I like the grunge effect it has, especially on textured subjects.

the texture issue may not be so important. go through and look at the previous grunge challenge... i would argue that a majority of them were achieved by "dark/grainy HDR" than texture overlays.

out of the top 40, i could only easily detect what might be a texture overlay in #14 and #33

thoughts?

Right -- legal to use in Expert challenges under the same guidelines as any other out-of-date/non-original texture image.

The last grunge challenge had the advanced rules, so you were not allowed to use texture overlays.
