For a while now I've been wondering how long my 300D shutter curtain was going to last... and now I've found out. I bought it at the very end of 2003; 7 months later and 11,500 frames, the shutter curtain is broken. :-(
I took a shot today using MLU with my hacked firmware (not sure if that had anything to do with it), and I heard the shutter make a sort of shlopping sound and then displayed Err 99. No amount of careful tampering would fix the problem, and when I tried sensor clean mode to see if the shutter moved, it didn't open.
So I'm taking it back to Dixons tomorrow in the hope that they'll give me a new one without too much faffing about. :-/ |

Uh oh! That really sucks. Are you going to flash it back to the original firmware before you take it in? |

I dont think they are just going to give you a new camera. But I dont know.
So if you hear a shlopping sound, then that must be bad. :)
Good luck. |

Oooooh yes! First thing I did. I couldn't actually flash it back to the original, but I downloaded the legit updated one from Canon's site.

Do you still have a warranty? |

last I heard the repair was $200 in the US for a D60 shutter, probably around the same for a 300D. |

Yeah it's still under its normal 1 year warranty, and I bought an extra 3 year warranty.
I'm certainly hoping not to pay for it, Gordon!
....fingers crossed! |

I believe that loading a bootlegged firmware upgrade voided your warranty. I'll bet that Canon will be able to tell that something like that has taken place.

The bootlegged firmware IDs itself as v1.1.1, as does the valid v1.1.1 upgrade. So, unless it keeps a very accurate log (which I doubt due to space requirements), I'm hoping I will be ok.
Famous last words, though..
Edit: I take your point about it voiding the warranty, though.

Poor Paul! Here he has come to us for a little moral support and you guys are implying "I told you so! na na na na na na" just because he installed a hack that for all intents and purposes made a great camera better with no known issues to make him think it would harm his 300D. I'm sure he knew what he was doing when he installed the hack and that he was risking his warranty by doing so.
Come on, folks, lets have some sympathy for the situation. Imagine how you would feel if you had to live without your beloved camera for God knows how long, waiting for a repair.
Good luck, Paul! Let us know how it turns out. |

While discussing the "unofficial" 300D firmware is certainly within the bounds of discussion here, any discussion that involves misrepresentation to Canon (or any other manufacturer or reseller) as to whether warranty has been violated could be viewed as running afoul of the site terms of service.
Ethically, if one has installed the hacked firmware on a 300D, the warranty is void, and they should not expect, nor ask for a warranty repair. Anything else is unethical, to say the least.

well as consolation, i DID not hack any firmware and I have sent my rebel in twice, my 100mm - 400mm L IS has been 3 times repaired. Oh did I mention the rebel is still giving me err 99 messages. And yes my repairs are covered but each time it is shipping costs and camera downtime : (
