I'm not sure I've ever heard or read a reason (good or bad) for this. Why may I only make additions to my challenge entry description while it's in voting? If I want to change something, I have to wait until rollover (midnight, on the East Coast; I'm in bed). Usually, for that matter, I just leave it blank.
Not to mention that thumbnails aren't parsed properly unless you make the edit after rollover (or resave it). At least, that's how it used to be.
Not a rant. It's annoying sometimes, but it's not ruining my life or anything. Just curious... |

If we told you, we'd have to ... well, you know ... ;-)
I guess that I can tell you (since you can probably guess yourself) that SC has found it "useful" for it to be that way ...

I have the same question, but it IS ruining my life. I can't eat or sleep because of it. ...well, ok I can't sleep. ...much. And it's all because of this issue.
No really, I am curious about the logic behind it as well. |

Ok - I get it - editing steps? Still, someone can remove them immediately after rollover.
eta: AND they don't HAVE TO put them in when they enter. I rarely do, if ever.

It discourages people from writing anything. |

Oh, I see. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the Court of Langdon. |

Not Langdon. He"s just a figurehead. It"s the Secret Council-- er, I mean the Site Council we have to worry about. |

It used to be, if I can remember in my dottage, that we could not edit the artist's comments during voting at all.
So, I guess I'm still thinking it's an upgrade from how it was... LOL!

It's meant to prevent you from bragging that you are going to ribbon and then change description to explain that no, of course it's not by chance, you were deliberately going for the brown :D
Honestly, there are probably valid reasons behind which I can't quite figure out, but I kind of like it.
You submit and say what you wish to say, if anything.
And then, it's done, message in a bottle. A portrait of what you felt about that image, when submitting.

For one thing...people have a distinctive way of writing such as the words they use, expressions, form etc. I for one have read so many descriptions on entries after the challenges that I've learned to recognize people solely based on their writing habits without even looking at their names next to a post in the forums.
People tend to have their own catch phrases, tend to use different combinations of software, tend to spell certain words incorrectly, use certain regional slang etc. I know this probably sounds excessive, but I have a pretty photographic memory, and over the years have learned to subconsciously pick up on these things when reading posts and photo descriptions on here. Naturally that also applies to processing techniques where people have certain undeniable styles no matter how subtle and we all learn to be able to pick certain photographers works out with ease. If you start giving details out during the challenge as to where a photo was taken, software used, expressions written in a certain manner you lose what level of anonymity you may have had during the challenge. Over time many of us have gotten to know the general area that people are located, and their travel habits. If you read a description stating "spent a day shooting down at the Stockyards" who comes to mind? If you read "left L.A. early in the morning and drove out to the desert to shoot...." Whom might come to mind? Since I know the location of those two people and their NORMAL travel habits I wouldn't necessary expect those comments to appear on the other photographers challenge descriptions. Not to say that it would never occur, but you get my point...I said NORMAL travel patterns. :)
It might not be THE main reason why we can't see them during challenges, but I for one am glad we can't because at least for some people it takes the anonymity out of the equation.

I've been here a short while and I can pick out certain photos, even the ones which aren't self portraits, with pretty good accuracy. I could only imagine if there was text to accommodate this how much easier it would become.

Thanks, DC. I think you misunderstood. I don't want to see yours or anyone else's during voting; I just want to be able to change my own. |

I used to like to pull down the little drop boxes and choose, say b/w, humourous, street... and then I'd always look for reflections and it was never there. Now I don't have that problem because the choices are gone until after rollover and by then I have forgotten about it. |

Ooops, you're right....I did misunderstand. That's what I get for reading when I'm over tired. LOL. Thanks for the clarification. :)
