How did Seanachai take this shot? And why is he not in the reflection?

In his notes he says he stayed in the dark treeline to avoid appearing in the shot.

he and the sun are about equal distance from the center of the ball -- in opposite directions.

if he had worn a dark shirt and shot from a slightly lower angle; him, the camera and tripod would have vanished completely.

What lens was he using??
To have such a narrow DOF & get the object in focus & not be visible in the image baffles me.
I guess I'll have to try it myself. Now where in my everyday objects do I find a silver ball like that??

The trees just to the left of the sun are in the middle of the ball, if you look close it looks like there is a tripod there. I also think I can see two feet to the right of that point, excatly below where the sun is.
(I loaded the image in PS and enlarged it, but of course it is difficult to see because of resolution).

Smart positioning and a good zoom.
