Very true. My point, I guess, is that since 96% of us really just want to know if someone liked our picture, a couple of comforting words is not the end of the world, or even disingenous. I may not know why someone wanted to enter a picture of their shoe, and I may think that had the person moved to the left ever so slightly, the large dollop of ketchup on the ground would not have been included and that may (or may not) have helped the composition. But I may also happen to like the inclusion of the back half of the pigeon, as I almost always like inclusion of pigeons, so I may remark on that and not all the other stuff. Does this "help" anyone, to include the other photographer? Probably not. But I don't think it "hurts" either.

Thank you! I do indeed feel lighter now. Liberated. Almost free to sin again, though that may be the wee Catholic boy still buried deep inside.
As for the pigeons, it is another matter entirely, and invariably justifies a comment from the discriminating viewer. The inclusion of some element of pigeon-ness will improve any picture, with no exceptions. You know that HCB shot Behind the Gare St. Lazare? Well here's a little known fact: that fellow wasn't jumping over a puddle, it was pigeon crap he was hurdling. So even pigeon crap will improve a picture, as HCB well knew. All his best stuff had some pigeon crap in there somewhere. |

mine is flirting with a 5.5, and based on what's been posted so far, i guess i should be grateful ;-) i chose a non-DPC image for my entry, rather than an "outtake", even though my BEST shots were DPC entries...

I don't remember if I had ever received 21 comments during voting. Well done guys... I have commented on a few images. Unfortunately I am away and not able to comment more. The score is quite good... I hope I can get a top ten result :)
