It might be nice to reverse the challenge rules and see what the results are like.

From what I can tell on a brief look, the rules seem to be basic editing for non-members, and any editing allowed for members for each challenge pair.

I think it would be very interesting to see just how much difference there was in the photographic/composition/editing if the members were limited by the rules and the non-members were no longer encombered by them.

Just an idea :-)

It only cost 25 bucks to join. It is one of the benefits of membership. Also Blue Moon is advanced editing and an open challenge. Besides, members can enter the open challenges anytime they feel like getting back to the basics.

You also are not compelled to use "advanced" techniques in the Member challenges ... I often use only the "basic" steps on mine.

You can also join for one month for only $5 to see whether you like the additional participation. Paid membership also gets you 10MB of space and the ability to make/sell prints.

What might be interesting is to see what the challenge would look like if NO alterations were allowed. I know there are some really good Photoshop artists out there...it'd be interesting to see how we all do without any software tools by just relying on the single snap.

You dont have to be a Photoshop artist to apply the general levels and curves and sharpness to a shot and just using those three tools can make a whole lot of difference. We had a challenge called 'Past' (too lazy to link atm) where all we could do was resize (no crop or anything) and for the most part it produced some fairly poor results. Yes, it can be interesting to see unprocessed images and who can get the best results out of the cam but we see poor images with complete editing and having no editing would likely just mean even more poor images for people to complain in the forums about.

The Past was like that, no editing allowed.

The one thing that has to be kept in mind is that most digital cameras produce images that are intended to be post processed. For this reason the images 'straight from the camera' are intentionally soft, a bit unsaturated in the color and such. The reasoning is that it is a lot easier to sharpen and saturate an image than it is to soften or desaturate. A challenge without editing will run into the 'limitations' of the camera very quickly.

I always cringe when I see someone at a photo koisk insert their card and hit the print button right away. Don't they care about how their pictures could be improved with just a little post processing?
Sorry for getting off subject.

Don't forget that originally ALL challenges had the basic rule set vs the rule sets we have now (non-members and members). The change came about after one of the Free Study challenges in which we were able to do all sorts of things to our entries. Then there was a poll to decide how we, as a whole, were going to change the rules and what we have now are the results. Usually I don't do a lot of post processing to my images anyway. Like my current entry in MacroIV, all I did was rotate, crop, resize, levels and curves. No color correction and no sharpening.

PS: Here is a link to the "classic" rules: //www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_rules.php?RULES_ID=1
