I changed the font on this from my original submission as that seemed to be a sticking point for several voters and wondered whether this would have fared any better than my original.
This was an alternative that I was considering submitting...however, I thought that some voters might recognise my daughter since she featured in the "Studio portrait" challenge a few weeks ago and therefore decided not to submit it.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
Thanks. |

The font still isnt the best but I do prefer the image you entered compared to the other. Having your daughter further back gives it quite an eerie stalker feel and compliments the 'out of darkness' title you gave to the album. I dont think you necessarily did anything 'wrong' but as with a lot of other photos on DPC they're good but just not wow.

Thanks Moodville..According to most comments the font seemed to be the main problem..but it`s difficult catering for everyone`s taste in fonts
I knew I wasn`t going to win anything with it..but had hoped it would scrape into the 6`s.
However, you`ve given me a good insight into why it didn`t.
Much appreciated. |

They're both a little overboard on the type effects. A simple typeface in white, gray or some muted color would have been better.
I think the bigger problem in this case is that you handled the two parts of the challenge separately. The image doesn't seem to relate to "Dance Party Candidates." The photo is more about "Out of the Darkness," which of course doesn't have the right initials. You had a good photo, and a good band name, but they didn't match each other IMHO. |

This is something I thought might have had an effect and if so ..it is totally my fault as I deliberately played it that way.
In my experience, album imagery tends to reflect the title of the album rather than the bands name ...and given that we were rather limited with the DPC initials to what we could come up with I thought it would be a better idea to go that way than try to match what would probably be a pretty weak band name.
When I re-read the rules for the challenge..it is clear that I did not put enough emphasis on the words "photograph something appropriate" as meaning a link to the bands name.
Thanks for the input Shannon...again this has helped a lot.
Incidentally...well done with yours :) |

I think your image was excellent (and prefer it to the alternate one posted).
I'm also happy for the image to reflect the name of the album rather than the band as this is quite realistic - provided both seem to work with the kind of band implied by the band name.
The biggest negative for me was the font and that remains the case in the alternative posted here.
I loved the simpler font treatments of the entries below. Notice not all are tiny but they are all somewhat sleeker and simpler in feel.

i mentioned this as a comment before, but the guy in the picture has an unnerving likeness to the guy in dance-group lamb, which is fronted by a female singer not a millions mile different in appearance to the girl featured here. for me, this made the picture work wonderfully as the style of picture suited the genre, and even a little like their own artwork. in terms of font, the second version shows a marked improvement. composition-wise though, i preferred the former. i know it isn't square, but it just looks more right. band pictures with the singer in the background out of focus is quite fashionable, though of course, it helps if you are sub-consciously thinking of a band where such a profile would fit... which i am, because they look like Lamb. wewll, to me, anyway. |

Hi Gordon
IMHO, I think the first photo is the best, but (a Wee but) I wouldn't have cut off vicky's boyfriends ear off. the font on the second photo is would be better on the first photo. just my 2 cents .. Tony |

I had a different shot for the album cover as well, thought I'd share here. Not really looking for any feedback ... join showin' the one I didn't choose.
Gordon, I gave you a 7. I liked the photo, but not the font. Also, I wish the ear wasn't cut off. |

Thanks to all for the input..this has helped enormously.
I noticed the "missing ear" but since nobody mentioned it..I thought I had gotten away with it...should have known better :(
Now repeat after me Gordon...keep fonts simple..keep fonts simple :)
David (Redmoon)..Your original comment regarding the band Lamb intrigued me, so I looked them up and have to agree, there is more than a passing resemblance between them and my daughter and her boyfriend... quite spooky. |
