I'd echo what sjhuls just said - the BO2011 ain't the place to goof around. But we should definitely have a U-pick freeforall-threeforall challenge where there are minimal, advanced, and expert challenges running concurrently. |

The poll results are hardly surprising given that Advanced is the only practical choice. Basic is unnecessarily limiting to show your best work for the year, and Expert/Minimal generally requires specific planning that few would have undertaken without prior notice. |

Still failing to see what's so horrifying. |

Actually horrifying to see there is no "I really don't care" option! ... that's horrible, terrifies me, and scares me too much, I can't sleep anymore... need a drink now :( |

LOVE this idea! |

Those who are arguing for limited/basic editing seem to be trying to level the playing field, fearing that the voters will respond better to advanced editing results. Except that the level playing field is an illusion. Or a delusion. Trying to control the PP in the expectation that it will eliminate unfair advantage is ridiculous. The notion that PP has nothing to do with photography is even more ridiculous. You have to get it out of the camera somehow. How you get it out of the camera has just as much to do with photography as how you get it into the camera.
So, I was thinking. How would I set up a fair challenge? with an almost-level playing field? Control the environment. Control the subject. Control the light. Make all contenders use the same polaroid camera. Give them the exact same amount of time for shooting. Staple the polaroid prints to the wall in a long hallway, evenly & perfectly lit. Invite some people in to vote who know nothing about photography. Then, after the voting is completed, invite an artist in to do something with the polaroid prints.

I voted for Expert Editing. Probably each photographer has more than one pick from 2011. You could do a montage or a composite under expert editing. You could do straight from the camera if you want. That would be lots of fun to vote on because of the variety. The personality & skillset of each one of us would be on display, which would be wonderful & entirely appropriate to a 'Best Of' competition. And, did I say FUN TO VOTE ON? We need more voting, more commenting, more FUN. |

i am holding out hope for a second expert editing best of 2011. i just dont want the only best of to be advanced for reasons i stated earlier but i would love to be able to enter both, one with my best shot and one with a creation using the entire 2011 catalog.
also if this happens, let us enter both, dont make us choose.

it's the employment of artistic versamilitude adding corroborative detail to an otherwise bald and uninteresting statistic. (The Mikado)

Langdon should end the voting now, so as not to completely embarrass the other two candidates. |

It won't matter to me as long as it is basic or higher. Basic editing is all I do anyway! |
