Is anyone giving lower marks for album covers not being square? Over ¼ of the pictures are clearly not square. I am not sure how I am going to vote on this matter yet so I would like to get some opinions before I vote.

The topic is album cover, not CD cover. This could include:
Cassettes (yes, they still exist)
Multi-disc sets shipped in a DVD case.
CD covers where photograph does not take up the entire side.
Aspect ratio is not weighting into my scoring.

Hey ClubJuggle, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I didn't give enough thought to the word "album," and I assumed CD cover...not that I voted any pictures down because of the shape, anyway, but I may have. |

When i think of album cover, the cd cover come to my mind and i expect to see something that should fit there.... even if the picture is good, once crop for the cd cover it should be as goog... what some is definitively not going to do once crop 4.75 x 4.75...
Even if i try to not give one and two for picture not fitting my interpretation of the challenge... for sure it score lower by 1 ou 2 point...
sorry ! |

I was thinking vinyl when it came to album covers. It makes me feel a little old! lol (at least I didn't think 8-track)

I based my scores first on the photo but I did give extra points for an especially creative band name or outstanding graphics. I didn't take the shape into consideration necessarily but the last question I asked myself was if the submission looked like it could actually be an album cover and if it was too far from square I might have decided it didn't.
My scoring was pretty much:
5 = average photo
6 = good photo
7 = good photo and creative band name or outstanding graphics
8 = good photo and creative band name AND outstanding graphics
9-10 = all the above plus looks like an actual album cover or any of the above is super-duper exceptional

Just picked up Jimmy Buffets new CD the photo on the cover is 5.5 x 5 inches. If ol'Jimmy can relax about the size so can we. |

for landscape shots you should also consider digipaks (the cardboard cases with the plastic dish - they're rectangular) and possibly for portrait-aspect shots, consider it being for longbox! i hoenstly feel it to be unreasonable to give a harsh score for an anti-square shot, so i didn't. |

I am giving entries not square and those without text the highest marks.
I was one of the individuals who took the initial instructions and ran with them. Then on the night before the challenge I was surprised to find out that they had changed the rules some twenty minutes later. I just added text to something that was not conceived with text in mind.
I also believe the instructions should have suggested a square album format, althought this is not a pre-requisite, but those who incorporated it will be certain to punish those that didn't for not being as smart. A taller than wide composition have been fitted on many albums by making the remaing space a solid color with either knokout or color type.
However, the good images will win and there are some very cool entries. |
