I normal don't use much in the way of props but I wanted to try something a little different the other day so my friend brought her daughter by (30 minutes till sunset so time was an issue) and I setup with some of my girls furniture on a dead end road just down the street from my place. My problem is I don't know if it works, I am tempted to just scrap them all as a learning exercise but wanted to see what you all thought. I think my composition is weak and it just doesn't flow, so let me know your thoughts. Please

I think you are being a bit too hard on yourself. You did a great job with the lighting, even creating some shadows that play well with the fence. The pinks really stand out and create a great focus point.
Only thing I may have tried differently is turning the chair on, but you positiong creates a bit of sassiness. |

I think it's a very well executed, nice, fun portrait. The pastels work great on the background of darker colors really bringing out the foreground, I also like the simple lighting setup. One thing is that my eye keeps going to where the road ends which is taking attention away from the subject, perhaps I would try to recomposition the shot so that her head is between the fences and the lines draw the viewer to her head? not sure if that would work but it's the only minor critique I can find. |

I like it. Definitely different, and you did a wonderful job considering the short amount of time you had to do it. |

Thanks all, I needed outside critical eyes to have a look. Often it can be hard to judge your own stuff, especially if it is something new. Thanks again. |

since you asked for a critique... I don't see much benefit in using these props outside. You've got a beautiful sunset and a picturesque rural view, you could make a great outdoor portrait with that, carefully lighting her face with a reflector or matching warm light... so why this pink chair and the nightstand outside? It would work if you were going for an absurdist/humorous scene, but I don't sense it was your goal, so it looks unnecessarily contrived, IMO. If on the other hand you placed them indoors, it probably would look much better. Just my 2c... |

the picture has a lot of good elements to it, but i agree with lev on his points.
it seems like 2 separate ideas put together. the sunset is beautiful, the warm colors against the rural scene is great. the girl has a nice, comfortable expression which gives a good "cute" factor to her. together, it feels like they're competing for my attention.
also, even though there's a good balance of light on the props and the girl, it seems a bit harsh against the background scene. the shadows are prominent and makes me feel like the entire scene is too contrived. mabye a softer light on the girl? i donno, i'm definitely no lighting expert (or even a lighting sub-amateur).
hope you're not offended, just my first reaction to the shot. |

Thanks guys and no I am not offended just wanted others thoughts on it and it is useful. This was more of an experiment on my end and wanted to try something a little different. The lighting is harsh since I had to use my octabox without the diffusion since the B800's don't have the power I needed. Not sure I would do this setup again but I think a nice antique chair for senior portraits would be nice. Thank you both for your thoughts. |
