Bleh. Tried shooting a little macro today, came out with a couple decent captures. I actually think I'll settle on a non-nature related object but here are some of my failed attempts:
Yea sorry 56kers.

Your "failed attempts", especially the last photo are way better than the crap that I was going to enter.

Fine...then dont.
But why post that? Does not make any sence to me. Just to say my rejects are better then anything you will submit? |

Perhaps rejects would have been a better word than failures?
Anyway, I totally didn't mean to offend anyone or post them just to be a dick. I posted them partly to keep me from lazying out and entering them (I know I can do better if I try) and partly to possibly give some other people ideas and maybe get some constructive criticism on them. A lot of the shots just don't have the bokeh and sharpness I was looking for.

Heh? THe word 'bleh' might applied to your 3rd foto, but not because of quality. And the word 'failed' doesn't fit any of them!
I *love* the amount of detail in the bee and fly pictures. And the separation in the dragonfly picture makes it just beautiful.
Awesome pictures! If the one you actually enter puts these to shame, well.... it's gotta be some picture!
Do you mind sharing with us what lens and camera you are using?

Thanks for the kind words :)
I am using a EOS-10d and the Sigma 105mm macro lens. For the dead fly carcass I was using some Hoya close-up filters (diopters). |

Sounds like I should add the Sigma 105mm to the list of my "to drool over" lenses. :-)
I've done some closeups with the lenses that I have, and *nothing* comes close to the sharpness I see in your bee or fly photos. |

Hehe, yea it puts my other lenses to shame as far as sharpness. Another thing that REALLY, REALLY helps when doing macro work is having a good slave flash. I opted for the Sunpak 555, it's a manual flash (although you *can* buy a TTL module for it) and its got a nice handle on it so I can hold it away from my subject and play with shadows a bit. |
