I agree that close ups may get dinged by the DNMC folks. However, I do not understand why everyone seems to think "Street Macro" has to include an actual street or road. When I saw the challenge, I thought of this as more or less street photography - defined by Wikipedia as a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings. But here instead of photographing the entire subject - we are challenged to close in and shoot a macro of that subject. Damn near a macro FS if you ask me.

Just the way I interpret it. Feel free to have your own opinion. Personally I don't see the examples Pixelpig posted as macros. They are close ups, but not true macro. Had you really got into 1:1 or closer, then you would never have known the subjects were in the road.

This could become an expensive hobby.
1. Go to town.
2. Put camera on MACRO.
3. Pull belt tighter, to lessen builders bum.
4. Crawl down Main Street, clicking as you go.
5. Submit to challenge, sell your house before they realize you're the crazy photog and the price drops, and move on to next town.
or

3. Make sure you're wearing your fast running shoes.
4. Push your camera into random faces, clicking as you go.
5. Submit to challenge, sell your house for lawyer costs, and move in with your mother. |

but, but, herfotoman, I kind of do all those things anyway. and if I am with family or friends they make sure they are several paces away from me. "one of these days," my beloved said to me recently, "someone is going to beat you up." (my beloved is thoughtful that way). |

You know Langdon is probably reading this thread and laughing his tail off. He intentionally posted an unusual and vague topic and people are still going to be anal and restrictive about what fits the topic.

I have my shot. I pushed my camera into the small subject but it's not a true macro. I just don't see the point really though I am concerned about DNMC. |

Closeups have done well in macro challenges in the past. I think most people are open minded about that.
However, I'm surprised at the narrow definition of the challenge. I assumed it was like street photography -- go out and find something -- don't set up a shot. I had an entry that I really liked, but it didn't show any street. 2 of the 3 people I asked thought it didn't meet the challenge. :(
My shot now includes the street.
But I still don't think that's what the challenge is about. |

Do we really care if it includes "the street"? What does that mean anyway? If it's macro, as it should be, who's going to know if it's the street, your driveway, or your patio?
Find a street and get close. That's it.
ETA: Not picking on you, Wendy. Rather, I feel your pain.

So..........? Still no clear definition? Is there no filter we can use on the DNMC people? Maybe stick a swizzle stick in their pee holes? Yes, I am drinking right now ;)

I have one but not sure how well it would do. In the middle of the street, there is a dead squirrel a block from the house being pecked at by a buzzard. Didn't think that would go over very well either. |
