Area of Concentration- is a grouping or body of work, which focuses on a concentrated area of intrest, or a particular idea expressed visually.
So, this year I'm in Photography III AP. My teacher is allowing us to pick an area of concentration for our portfolio. I like the concept, but have no clue what my area of concentration is. I was wondering if I could get help narrowing it down a bit. My main interests in photography are animals, wildlife/nature, macro, and sports. See, I work with animals at a Vet clinic and outside of work. I also live out in the country so there's lots of nature and wildlife. I just absolutely love macro 'cause it shows a different perspective of things. And I enjoy video taping and photoing sports, since my brother's an athlete. Do you understand why I can't make up my mind? Please give me some advice to make things more simple. |

Looking at your portfolio I would suggest fifth area - people. |

I can't just shoot everything. I have to have a theme. I guess I do like portraits, so I could do people. |

You have to have a theme for your portfolio, right?
So, shoot everything and sort it into categories, one of which you put into your portfolio.
If you "specialize", you'll pigeonhole yourself. |

I think they want here to approach the project with a specific goal in mind, hence the "area of concentration". It's not like she'll be married to it forever, it's just a specific project for a specific period of time.
For what it's worth, I'd find it most pragmatic to choose "the unseen revealed" and go with macro. Why? Because you can do it anywhere, anytime, regardless of weather and such. And it's sort of wide-open in its own way, once you accept you're gonna be shooting small stuff :-)

Shoot embarrassing photos of your classmates. The theme is "blackmail".

Or nudes, those always went over well in high school. Especially with the nuns. |

If you pick Black and White for your area of concentration, that might give you the freedom you need while it satisfies our teacher's need for order. |
