It would be interesting to see statistics on this, though I'm sure no one is gathering them (and it would be a pretty daunting task). I heard on NPR, but sent some texts on my iPhone - even if the primary source wasn't on a device he developed, there's a pretty strong possibility one of them plays a role...

Wow....I didn't know that after Apple canned Steve back in the '80s he went to work on the "NeXt" computer. While I do remember this computer being in the news at times, I didn't know this:

The NeXt workstation was used to develop the world's first WEB SERVER and used to develop HTML !

I heard it on an iPad 2.

Not to sound crass but do you think the "big news" Apple just released on a non cutting edge phone pushed him over the edge.

My feeling is that he really wasn't able to even realize the events of the last few days. He was very sick over the last few weeks. Maybe even close to death for days.

Does anybody remember a few years a go when Apple kept denying that Steve was sick?

Cancer in 2004
Liver transplant in 2009
Death finally got him in 2011
Those seven years he fought for life, he pretty much changed the face of mobile computing and cemented Apple's place as it's leader. That said as a PC/Android guy I am most grateful for his work in taking Pixar from a possibility into a perennial challenger for an Oscar.

I suspect the recent iPhone presentation was heavily affected by Jobs' declining health. The fact that Steve was a no-show for the event even as a Facetime chat cameo or post-show interview means Tim Cook , Schiller, Forstall and crew surely knew the end was near. In the context of such an enormous distraction, the somewhat hastily organized format in a smaller venue without a Quicktime feed makes perfect sense. Just imagine what must have been going though those guys' heads while pulling off a presentation that the public only perceived as comparatively dull!

that comment did put a smile on my face too.

i woke up to this sad news. the company he created truly moved my life in a different direction.

The guy not only had vision but he understood the timing as well, not only did he know what should be developed but more importantly when to develop it. The products and companies he oversaw truly changed the world. I like Apple, but i don't like using their products. They forced the companies that i like to use to keep pace with them, truly a progressive company run by a truly progressive leader.

I'm curious to see how this affects Apple, Jobs vision was clearly the driving force behind Apple, but when one person is the solely the face of a company's brand, what happens to that company when that person is gone?

As a self-confessed iGeek, I'm absolutely gutted the world has lost Steve Jobs. We don't get many visionaries like him anymore. Steve Jobs was Apple, and Apple was Steve Jobs.

Let's hope that his life can inspire others to think outside the box, especially after Tim Cook's lackluster appearance at the iPhone 4S launch...

RIP Mr. Jobs.

+1 - it sort of does feel personal in a way when something he developed is sitting nearby most of us. RIP
