I have been a lurker for a few years... so finally I decided to join. My current job as a cable guy has gotten, how shall I say... Its just not as fun as it used to be. Im hoping I can turn my love for photography and taking pictures can be a full time thing in the future.. My wife and I bought a nice camera a couple years ago as a wedding present to each other, Rebel XTi, but I know that some of the things I want to do, Ill have to upgrade the body...
I have 2 wonderful kids and a great wife who puts up with me.. LOL... currently trying to get my certificate at the New York Institute of Photography online course.. and trying to learn the manual settings on the camera.. Little difficult but I think it is slowly sinking in.. Im sure if I have questions there will be some good answers here..

Welcome in this crazy house, Phil.
We will try to put up with you, like your wife does.
Regarding the camera and manual settings: you just should try them out.
Try different settings on a same object and see on your computer what difference they make. You'll find out very soon which setting is appropriate for which type of photograph you want to make. Play with the shutter settings, the aperture etc. That's the best way imho.
Have fun :) |

Catchy thread title : )
I did the cable tv thing a long time ago, in Lakeland Fl, about 1971, when it was still steam powered. Disconnect days were the most interesting part of the job because we had to go to the location and physically disconnect the line. Boy did we hear some interesting stories and get some crazy offers. : )
It's good to see you becoming active. I hope that you will enjoy being active on the site.

"Hell" to you too, Phil.
Welcome to DPChallenge. I just took the plunge and went full time in photography early this year. That's about 7 years after I found this site. As I often mention, at least 95% of what I know about photography originated here on DPC. I say 'originated' because while I might not have learned the full 95% here, what I experienced here is what has led me to learning about it. In other words, I might have eventually stumbled across it and learned it elsewhere, but DPC is like a fast forward conveyor belt that delivers you into the world of photography and what the possibilities are.
I'll let someone else ramble now...Welcome! |

Hi PHil, and welcome!
As Nadine said, play with the settings! Unless you are shooting something very special or for someone else, what have you got to lose? That's the beauty of digital! (My bigger challenge is the post processing!) You will find lots of information and support, so dig in, enter challenges, take the comments with a grain of salt as thick skin is good here, lol, and no.....they won't unbuckle that jacket. The sleeves are supposed to be sewn together and pray your village isn't burned to the ground! :P
Also, don't believe Slippy. |

Why do you love me?
Why do you need me?
Always and forever
We met in a chatroom,
now our love can fully bloom.
Sure the world wide web is great,
but you, you make me salivate.
Yes, I love technology,
but not as much as you, you see.
But I STILL love technology,
Always and forever.
Our love is like a flock of doves,
flying up to heaven above.
Always and forever.
Always and forever.
Yes, our love is truly great.
Always and forever.
Why do you need me?
Why do you love me?

@ Slip - after THAT serenade...???
Hell back at you, Phil.
And oh, BTW, that's the "slippy" Grog was referring to.
Oh, Grog... he's--
Never mind, you'll figure it all out soon enough. |

Very soon there the term "can you hook me up with some free cable" will be a thing of the past. And I mean very soon (at least here where I live). The company that makes voice ports for cable phone has already announced they are going to stop making them. At that point all Cable phone will be VOIP until total FO take over. Then they will be able to do anything and everything from the head-end. Some of which is down right spooky!

The future is now! Soon every American home will integrate their television, phone and computer. You'll be able to visit the Louvre on one channel, or watch female wrestling on another. You can do your shopping at home, or play Mortal Kombat with a friend from Vietnam. There's no end to the possibilities!

Let me tell you about something. While you're out there playing patty cake with your friend Pedro, your Uncle Slippy is making 120 bucks.

You appliances lets the company know if there's a problem before you know it and the list goes on. All this is today's technology. Tomorrows will deal with deep privacy issues well beyond facebook and others.

I sent a ticket to the SC asking them to add the "Go to" to the thread title.
Welcome to DPC, Phil. It's a very friendly place to learn. Just a warning: Trust nobody. ...except Slippy. |
