Any ideas on a first lighting setup??

yep! I just bought mine from home depot for 37 bucks total. 1500 watts. I bought two halogen lamps with a twin head tripod with carryng case ($19.99) & one floor lamp 500 watts also for $10.00. They come with a grate but I just didnt install them. They work really well, very bright but can get VERY HOT, VERY QUICK, so you gotta exercise EXTREME caution when using them.
I did a search in google for cheap studio lighting set up and cheap home studio.
Got some really good ideas from the links I found.

same, but i use 3 clip lamps from walmart, 6 dollars each and 60 watt GE REVEAL bulbs. Backgrounds include white posterboard, and white and black sheets.

Halogen shop lamps are a favorite amoung the cheap lighting crowd (myself included). These can be picked up for about $20 (US)/1000watts. The drawbacks I have found are heat (there is a lot of it) and you need several to be able to capture a moving target (such as a model as she moves from pose to pose). The biggest problem though is that the light has to be bounced off of something, or filtered through something, or it will be extremely harsh (very high contrast). This usually means having several, which can be a pain to get the shadows just right. But that is the price you pay for taking the extremely cheap route, I suppose. :(
