Depends of what kind of lights you want and need. If you just want alot of light then you can use a few 500W Hallogens and bounce them. If you want strobes then you could try some Alien Bees. You can check prices on a variety of stuff at eBay, and B&H.

Flash or constant lighting? How cheap?

Flash - try Alien bees //www.alienbees.com/ - the website is odd, the catalog is free and good. I have heard many good things and read good reviews.

constant lighting, cheap - go to Sears and get the 'halogen work light' on a tripod, (there are MANY choices, cheap - light or more likely 3 of them - under $200 for all 3. If it is the only light then there are no WB issues, different wattage bulbs are avaialable, etc. The only drawback is the lights are hot.

I read these are cheaper than conventional studio flash units. //www.tocad.com/fp_38_flash.html

Owen, with a Guide Number of 38 at ISO 100, those do not seem very powerful. For comparison, a 550EX has a GN of 180 at ISO 100, and the on-camera flash of the 300D has a GN of approximately 13...

I'd agree that the Alien Bees are an excellent, oft-recommended solution for studio strobes.

I use a pair of Sears super halogen work lights. They feature two intensity levels and are tripod mounted. Cost: $19.95.
I removed the heavy wire grill from the front of the fixtures to eliminate the 'grid pattern' shadow the grill would cast on the subject area.
Each quartz lamp is rated at 250 watts so the pair produces 500 watts of incandescant light.
Filters are available at photo supply shops to correct the color temperature.

take care w/ the work lights if you go that path. They're not designed for photo work so be very careful in handling and applying gels. I've melted several gels that got too close over the course of the shoot.

I use 3 seven dollar clip lights from wal mart. I use GE Reveal bulbs with them. But I dont do portraits with this.

I'd like to piggy back off of this question. I've just started here on DPC, and have actually never done any studio or "staged" photography. I've recently started looking for lighting equipment myself to set up a small studio.

Is halogen lighting the standard light used in constant lighting equipment? Is there any other type of lighting recommended as good to have?

i use regular 60 watt incandescant bulbs. but this isnt good for portraits, as it really isnt enough light. (120 watts total)

If you haven't already been, eBay is awesome.
