This year Yuri Arcurs Photography is putting together an elite international academy program in the hope of producing the most competent and gifted photography class of 2015. This private funded program runs for three years, during which participants will be given a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience travel to exotic locations, a first-class photography education from some of the industryĂ¢€™s leading experts, and working experience through interactions with real projects, clients and top models.

We are looking to recruit 10 Ă¢€“ 15 candidates, who will have to prove they are motivated, ambitious and bright.

Here is the blog with all of the details. It looks like this is free except that you have to pay for your travel to South Africa and accommodations during a two week boot camp. It seems that this boot camp is a tryout of sorts for the three year program that might also be used for a reality TV show.

Also required, is a 16+ megapixel DSLR. So, a D700 is no longer good enough, huh?

A different time in life, say 20 years ago or two years from now and I would consider this. Actually, if three years is out of the question, the boot camp alone might be a great opportunity for travel, fun, and learning.

How can anyone stand Yuri for more than a day is beyond me. His voice hurts my ears.

my reading of this, it is a casting call for a photography-related reality TV show, where prospective participants need to pay for attending the audition. No?

Im guessing that looking good in front of the camera will be more important than being good behind the camera.

Ah, yep!
And then, the "winners" get their "education" by basically working for them for three years, I'll bet with minimal pay. Yep, they'll get "schooled" for sure!

I think this sounds pretty cool. Maybe too good to be true?
I wish they had more concrete details about how this worked.
I'm seriously debating applying, but three years is a long time to go without a paycheck. They do use the word "job" at the end though. Could that possibly include a paycheck? Probably not, but I can't see how anyone could afford to do this otherwise unless they were independently wealthy, in which case, what's the point?

I'm amazed anyone would want to sign away 3 years of their life with so little information - the website doesn't really tell you anything except that it's a reality tv show and you'd have to move to SA.

Hi everyone

I actually work for Yuri Arcurs in Cape Town and am part of the team working on this. I am going to clear things up..

1. The camera requirements were reduced to 10mp a while ago.

2. There is a flyer up on the website with all the info on. There is also an email address to ask any questions you might have about the education.

3. We are offering a free education, we have has lots of students apply, it is ideal for people who have just finished school and want to study photography and perhaps cannot afford it. Your only cost is (if you don\'t live in S.A) a plane ticket here and accommodation for the 2 week bootcamp. During the 3 year education WE pay for accommodation, travel costs, food, internet and even give you pocket money. Where in the world can you study for free and receive all that?

4. After the three year education, you will receive a diploma and if you are good enough a job with us.

5. There is no cost to attend the bootcamp. Even very poor South Africans have entered.

6. We have been looking into a reality show. Nothing is final on that. We are looking to train up our future photographers, not start a modeling agency, we have enough models to work for us already ;)

7. Yuri also has his own Facebook page where he personally answers questions so if you want more info ask for some

If you do want to apply and have any questions please email me on arcurs.productions@gmail.com

This will not disqualify you by asking a question regarding the education

Will there be challenges involving strength, stamina, dexterity, and creativity? The winner of the weekly challenge will have immunity, but all others will be on the cutting floor. Someone will be voted out, and sent to Blurry Island, forced to fight for their life against other exiles.

Showmance! Sabotage! Alliances!

I can see it now...

JulietNN and I can form a secret alliance. I'll sneak into the gear bags of other students and smudge their sensors before challenges. Juliet will cause drama.

The program sounds really interesting, and I actually was thinking about it because I've been looking for a sort of internship where I can learn the business side with an established photographer and at the same time hopefully take my photography to the next level, but the flyer says "no photography background required" and they don't ask to see a portfolio... so what are they looking at to select the people to attend the boot camp?

You can join the secret alliance I have with JulietNN. Now we just need a cool alliance name.

Uhm to put it bluntly....stupidity? The naive belief that they'll actually end up working for Yuri? Yeah, sure, doing what, keywording for stock sites? Working your way up to lightstand adjuster? Ooh, maybe if you're REALLY good, you actually get to mount up lenses for the great man himself!!!! *swoon*

Think about it.

Hey all who might be taking this Yuri thing seriously, I emailed the girl who says she works for him:

I am not a photographer for Yuri Arcurs, I am the recruiter in Cape
Town, I joined the forum to get our message about the photography
education out to other photographers, especially beginners who have
always wanted to study photography but might not have had the means to
afford an education. You can check Yuri Arcurs' website
(www.arcurs.com), Facebook page or Twitter if you would like to verify
the information. His portfolio is also available on his website and
has images on a variety of stock sites including istock.
