I have noticed that as someone gets better at doing things, the way they do them become less and less obvious. They still do them based on the same basic 'rules' (yes I know there is a large following that hate that word), but they make the use of those 'rules' non-obvious.

So, in the spirit of the 'photograph depicting ______, without actually photographing a _______' type challenges, I propose a type of challenge that uses non-obvious (NO) techniques. Obviously, some techniques are easier to make non-obvious, but the ease of the challenge should not be a determining factor -- now should it.

Some NO-technique samples would be: non-obvious leading lines, the lines won't be actual lines in the photo, but will be suggested based on other elements of the composition or perhaps a non-obvious rule of thirds, in which the power points are used -- but not directly, such as a suggested point of convergence or intersection of other compositional elements or perhaps as the fulcrum point of the compositional balance.

I know the voters will not know what to do with something that is not 'slap me in the face' obvious, but I'm sure they will survive -- and as Nietzsche says, it will only make them stronger. :D

What do you think?

Completely stumped. Have you got some 'examples' of what you might mean?

I can just see it now. ha ha! Saw the leading line in like 2 seconds. 2. lol

would this work?

seems as though it would be a difficult one to vote on.

Well, for a 'no tech' shot.....must be your tongue in cheek.
Nice shot Cool

Thanks for the 'examples'. Which rule(s) are they making non-obvious?
Perspective? Rule of thirds?

If the photographers shooting for it and the voters are looking for it, how do you possibly make it non-obvious?

i can see the point with the idea.
and also how many wouldn't

this a better example?

in the last photo
1) the subject ( cigarette ) is not in focus
2) the focal point is centered
3) the framing is very tight

however it follows the rule of thirds on a number of levels.

errrrr

I'd score it a one in the theme of the 'challenge' to show no obvious techniques at all. It totally fails on that count.
