Still on a 24 months+ homebuild Athlon XP1200 system with 256Mb 266 DDR RAM and a 20GB fast HD (7Gb left because I trust my Kodak Ultima Gold CD-R's) on a MSI KT7-something Mobo. 17inch CRX VL700 monitor @ 800x600 32bit with a Nvidia Riva TNT model 64 videocard in the tower (calibrated). Win 98SE, Irfanview, PS6.0 with a lot of bought actions and plugins, PS Elements 2. The first thing that needs an update is the monitor, I'd like a flatscreen 19" CRT. The computer itself will be updated when something brakes down. It is still on its first Win installation, altough I did some stupid stuff with it. This is the one I work most with.
The other one is a Acer laptop with a Atlon XP1800, 256DDR, 15" screen 32bit 1024x? thingy running Win XP. Great screen.
The third one, at work, is a NEC Intel Celeron 600 piece of crap, because the mobo has a slower busspeed than necessary. A homebuild Pentium 2 350 easily outperforms it one every task. I don't want to mess with it.
Calibrating its 17" monitor made a big difference for the viewing.

lots more, I only have less than 10 gb left. Time to backup and delete some more unused programs. It is a fun computer but you do need to stay in the sweet spot, which is fine by me. Nobody needs to see what I am doing :)

And you're right, I'm gonna be getting a laptop for college and I can't wait! Lol, it'll be like 2-5x everything I have now (well, except for HD space cause of the external) and I will be in heaven. ^_^ |
Make sure you get something with either an XGA type screen or an external monitor for doing work in your room. Laptop screens just aren't the same as CRT monitors. They are always to bright or to dark, never quite right...
At least mine isn't.

Compaq Deskpro with Pentium II inside:
128Mb Ram
3Gb Hardrive
Windows NT (but upgraded to Window XP)
Takes me almost 40-50 seconds to open up Photoshop. When I return from shooting I have to immediately burn to cd because I don't have hardrive space. |

Been using a mac (and loving it too) longer than I'd care to admit. Let's just say I remember when Aldus PageMaker fit on a single sided floppy and my computer had no hard drive.
Things were so simple then |
LOL! I remember using Aldus PageMaker, too! I started using v4 and v3 of Photoshop. Installers came on floppies! Then I made the jump from Aldus PageMaker 5 to Adobe InDesign and I've been very happy.

Now I have a Dell 2GHz, recently upgraded to 1024 RAM and added a 160Gb Hard drive to my original 40Gb. Ancient (as these things go) "Envision" 17" flat screen.
A far cry from my first: An Apple II+, upgraded to 64K. Hey, it ran a word processing program, SuperCalc and a primitive Paint program and had a Hayes MicroModem, 400 baud. Also boasted an Epson 9-pin dot matrix printer. Big time, you bet. |

#4 all of the above. :)
You need a good monitor to see the colors clearly and a calibrated one at that. Hard drive is important because you need a place to store your photos and any applications you need to manipulate them. RAM is, well, always important and even more so when dealing with large digital media files. The applications, or photoprogram, is significant becaue that lets you be creative. If you want to have more precise control over your images, you don't want to use some basic low-end editing application vs something like Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
PS: Don't forget about a good photographer. There's an acronym that applies here: GIGO. That means garbage in garbage out. You're only going to be as good as the photos you take. Editing skills are, for the most part, secondary in my opinion. Not that good editing skills are not important because they are. OK, I'll stop babbling. :)

Home machine
AMD 2500+ / 1GB.DDR400 RAM
19" iiyama panel monitor
240GB HDD's 80GB + 160GB both @ 7200rpm
Radeon 9800 pro vid card
DVDRW
all wrapped up in a clear case with copper cooler master and temp check and some flashing fans on the side to help cool the case down.
OS=Windows XP pro
Photoshop CS with a few filters thrown in
Lappy (as seen in my challenge entry for advertisment)
Sony PCG-U3 1GHZ CPU 256MB DDR266 RAM 20GB HDD all the size of a small paperback novel, it runs Windows Server 2003
Photoshop CS + some filters / ACDC6.0 /Paintshop pro 8.0.
I feel the important thing to a photographer in a PC would have to be monitor firstly then I'de say loads of RAM and fast CPU to help post process without having to wait 1/2 an hour to see the results. In saying that though, as long as it gets the job done then it's got to be good.
My first PC has a DOS O/S that had to be loaded by floppy everytime i switched it on I had a HUGE 40MB HDD that weighed a ton .. I can remember also running 3.1WIN and getting my first ever 8MB card and a 1GB HDD thinking " I can NEVER fill this HDD up"... oh how things change... lol

For my desktop:
2.8ghz AMD
512mb Ram
2x160 gb Serial ATA Drives in Raid Control
Radeon 9600 Pro
19" NEC Accusync Monitor
For displaying in my bedroom (the absolute winner :-)
Acer Notebook taken apart:
Pentium 75
16 MB Ram (upgraded from the original 8MB)
810 MB HD
12.1" Screen (Taken apart and flipped over)
-I load lower resolution photos onto my 128MB compact flash card, put it in a PCMCIA adapter and set the screensaver to randomly display the photos. Quick bootup time, and get to see a new picture all the time. The laptop was just sitting in a closet for several years, couldn't sell it for $50, but now it shows my photos all the time, much cheaper than one of those digital picture frames and bigger. |
