I find that a vote of 5 is destructive enough to the end score that I don't go much under unless its one of the major mess of a wtf? image titled "IMG_2905" (still go 1 here).
So, I'd probably give Ansel a 7 if I could stretch the DNMC to reach his title and see the challenge from his image,
and if it was so bad a DNMC like a B&W landscape in a "Pastel Portrait" challenge I'd give him a 4/5 at worst. Those 5's are ribbon killers.
But thats just me. |
And that is one of the voting/scoring problems. There is a reason the voting scale is 1-10, and you should use the scale respectively. BUt lets assume they changed the scale to 5-10. Would you then hesitate to vote anyone a 5 because it is the lowest score? See the problem? Before long, with enough voting scale adjustments, the scale would only be 10. Where's the fun in that? | Still never received a comment on the scoring question here. Anybody want to broach this subject> Any response? |

I think you people just don't get it...I think these types of responses PUBLICLY condone vote manipulation...even with the thread chatter I can see peoples scores dropping...same old story of late...I just don't understand why people have to open up their mouths during a challenge...let it all go..what will be will be..opinions are just that...and the scores will be what they are at the end...no need to acknowledge publicly out loud and for everyone to hear..that you are manipulating the vote...amazed you are getting away with it... |

If you would win real money by doing well in a challenge, all of these discussions would be so much more worth it. |

If real money was up for grabs the scoring system would not be based on votes by the participants themselves. |

Yes, you are definitely right there. But I bet some would cheat their way to vote for themselves somehow, especially if money was involved. Especially since some have found a way to see who's picture they are voting on in a challenge.

I'm wondering how our literalist members will deal with the upcoming "Home sweet home" and the DNMC.
Is it a free study? No, its a guided challenge, but the difference between DNMC and DMC is subtle,
and involves at the minimum, interpreting title for context and image for content and then some thought perhaps.

To tell the truth I was expecting much more from this image, but in any case a 6+ is always ok :) |

Looks like a high view to vote ratio for this challenge. Yes / No? |

Just because the scoring is from 1-10, doesn't mean that you have to use all the numbers. If all of the photos in a challenge are spectacular, I'm not going to give the: "slightly less than spectacular, but still incredibly awesome" photo a 1, simply because a 1 is in the scale.
A 5 to me is a photo that uncle joe takes at the family reunion, and the score goes up and down from there. I rarely give 1s, 2s and 3s, simply because I think that the majority of the photos on dpc are better than the averages uncle joe's photos. If there's something truly atrocious, I'll use it. But for the most part, the bad photos are simply "meh" not atrocious. |

Well, I honestly thought my entry would be a 6+ and not barely hanging on to a 5. It's a really nice picture (not a snapshot) and NOT a shoehorn in my opinion. I had it all planned out from the beginning. It takes place at a very specific time of day and I think that, while it's not a clock, watch or something old, it definitely shows a certain time. It certainly doesn't call for the extremely rude & sarcastic comments I'm getting (mixed in with a few nice ones).
I feel that sometimes creativity is really discouraged on this site and as a result, I've gone back to wondering why I even bothered to pay for a 2nd year. I removed my home entry because it's not a picture of my actual home and from now on I'll only enter pictures in challenges that are very specific (and maybe not even then).
This site would be really great if it weren't for the voters.

i have to disagree somewhat... especially for this challenge, where the concept of "TIME" is abstract and intangible, the title may be essential to allowing the viewer to "get it". also, in general, i think titles are very important to conveying the meaning of any art and move it beyond the "ooo, look, pretty colors" eye-candy level
-mefnj |
My opinion is if you want to score well, make sure the photo is good enough to show the voter where you are coming from. If it fits the challenge, then I see no reason why someone would vote yours low. | Mine, is to shoot what people like here, then it will score well. |
And thats a shame you have to do that to score well. | You are not the brightest light are you. You have to put comments in the context of the conversation. To say it again. If you want to receive high votes here, you have to shoot what they like here. |
