I think stlikestrip should be part of this team.. You may not know this, that he looked back in his family tree, and found chinese ancestory.. To boot he also found out there were females. So, he is at least 50% female if he 6.25% chinese.. |

Whoa, Sheryll, you weren't kidding there, were you...
Okay, that'll do it. Sheryll, hope your keyboard still works. |
Yep keyboard works.... just had to clean it off a bit. lol.
I did 22 years. I would've stayed longer and went to Iraq but, being a single mom I didn't want put the family care plan to test. I likely would have made Senior Chief that year but my son was more important to me. I have no regrets. Of all the countries you listed the only one I've seen is Australia. Other countries I've seen are Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Mexico, Canada, Samoa (American and Western), Guam (my son was born there), um well I think there's more but, I can't remember right now. I'm coming down off a sugar high (which might explain my earlier rambling).
Maggie your little baby sounds cute. I too have always had big breeds. Mostly retrievers. I look forward to seeing some photos.
I think TheDruid may just be jealous of our team and wishing he were part of it. It's okay Tiberius you can come play in our clubhouse if you'd like. How is you absolut verification coming?
Well ladies (including you Tiberius) I must get into bed before I crash too hard. |

OK, a little about me. I live with my friend Laura. I have no children but am looking into adoption. I have a 2nd degree black belt in Judo / Jiu Jitsu. I work as an engineer for a semiconductor company. These days most of my free time is spent on photography or with my 2 yr old nephew, who happens to live next door. I have always lived in the Boston area but have spent quite a bit of time in Canada (NB, NS) as I have a lot of family up there. Like Maggie, there is some Mi̢۪kmaq in my family tree. |

Denise, have you back to NB or NS lately? I am going in a few weeks to Cape Breton. To early for the fall colors but duty calls :) Lucky nephew to have photography lessons this early. You know, we have to be related somewhere along the line.
Hipychik - gee, your life does sound tough (read ideal :) I second Sheryll's comment - would be nice to see your driftwood art.
Sheryll - I enjoyed your sharing :) it's fascinating to hear about the variety of life experiences of my team mates. I have hardly traveled and look forward to the day when I can.
Alice I must get to SF one of these days to drop in on your Gallery . it sounds so ideal - I love the website.
I am learning the ins & outs of my new camera. I was so excited to get it last week but need to get comfortable with it before I photograph my Emily's wedding on Sept. 3rd. It scares me to death but it's what she wanted as her wedding gift.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

A little about me: I was born, raised, married and will probably die in Utah. Yes, I am Mormon (member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints.) My beliefs are a huge part of me. One of my basic values is the freedom of choice, so while I may choose a particular lifestyle, I don't expect others to do the same and will appreciate people for the individuals that they are.
I"m an elementary school principal for a year round school that serves 850 at-risk students. Yes, it keeps me busy.
I have 4 grown children and a 16 yo daughter at home. I have 8 grandchildren (2 brought into the family through marriage) from 3 to 14.
I have done some major landscaping this year, remodeled my master bedroom, even taking down a load bearing wall and shoring up the truss ssytem. I love a challenge and I love making things beautiful.
In the next week I'll be taking my husband, daughter and 2 Korean student teachers to Moab to see Arches National Park. Of course, I'll bring my camera. Wish me happy shooting.
I'm delighted to be working with such a great diverse group.
My mother grew up in Watsonville, CA and I've spent many summer vacations in the area, including Santa Cruz.
My brother lives in Michigan. One of my fondest memories is flying his rented 4 seater back from Macinaw Island to Pontiac airport.
I'm sure I'll have other connections as we go on.

Becky I understand where you are coming from. I am surrounded by LDS and have many friends who are LDS. I belong to a non-denominational Christian Church myself and am pretty involved in it. I've been to Macinaw Island. It was beautiful and very fun. My favorite part of it was the fact that there were no cars. It was pretty cool. Have fun on your trip and good luck with your shooting.
Denise I think adoption is a wonderful selfless option. Since I only have one child, I myself have considered it. I haven't done it yet because I want to get my finances in order so that I can afford it (without additional support provided just for doing it). I also live in an apartment right now and don't have any room for another child yet. I would likely adopt an older child because of my age but I would love to have a girl. My son would rather have a boy so he has a friend. It's going to be a while but, I still may do it. Only God can put the pieces into place. I have applied for a home loan and if it goes thru and I purchase my first home then maybe that will put me in a better place to be able to do it.
What about you Patsy??

Terrific resume, Becky. It is hard to express in words what your work with kids means to your community and to our society. That old slogan "way to GO, girl" will have to do for the moment.
what is it about Macinaw Island? that makes three of us who own to having visited there. My arrival was one I'll never forget. There is a regularly (!) scheduled air flight to the island and it seemed a lark to travel that way. So, getting rid of the rental car after exploring upper Michigan, and striding into the airport there my buddy and I were. Confronted with a nice guy who was acting as ticket agent, baggage handler and pilot. Escorting us to this cute little 6-seater craft he invited us aboard, skipped the seatbelt and oxygen lecture and took off into the blustery weather. With the wind tossing this way and that, we eventually sighted the Island landing strip. This was the very first time I wished the runway was ----wider---- rather than longer. But he aimed his airship correctly and offloaded us and our baggage. We were eventually picked up by a nice little horse and buggy that delivered us to our hotel. It is a beautiful little gem of an island. And yes, we flew out again a week later.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Becky reminded me that we met a while back (2007) at a DPC-GTG at Point Reyes Seashore, north of San Francisco. One of my pictures might show Becky. Are you the pretty lady, 3rd from Left? And yes, I do remember you!

Becky, thanks for sharing - and Alice said it better than I could about the impact your job has on so many levels, especially in the lives of the kids. Bless you. Watsonville eh? I lived there for a year in this great little cottage that had a grape arbor where I would pick the big juicy purple grapes right off the vines that were suspended over my head. I have to say that I like living in Santa Cruz better as I love seeing the ocean from my front windows. I hope your trip is filled with joy and lots of photo ops. I can't wait to see the shots.
Sheryll, any word on if this tournament will get a private thread like we had before? I took some photos and would sure love feedback.
If not, then I was wondering, as I only put the FB page up to share photos, if it would be a good place to use to just do that? That way our photos would be in the same place. I will take it down once we are finished. Just a thought.

I won't be able to post my pics of FB for you all to review because I have other FB friends who are active on DPC. It would be cheating if they were posted on FB and they were able to view. Actually, now that I think about it, we could create a folder on there and only allow the team member to view, I think. I've never tried to do that, but I think we can. Would be easier though if we had a team thread here on DPC. |

It would be easier if we had a place where we only had access. That was why I was thinking of using the FB I put up as there is no one there but us. |

No I wouldn't use FB. That's why I created the Share account. We can use that because it is a closed group and only those invited can see the photos. just create an account and then on my "sharepage" is where you would put them up. Then we can all view them and there is a discussion section too where we can talk about them. |

I see. I thought that plan was discarded. I can't get to any page on your share account other than the Logo page (which I am still in awe of) I really am not at all talented when it comes to social networking. Sorry :( |

Alice, that is the group, bit I'm not in that shot. That's Carl's wife - he's on her left. I have no idea where I' d wander off to. When I'm near my computer, I'll have to pull off some pictures from that day. |

No problem. I wanted to get all of us on there first and we can explore and try it out. If it doesn't work for us then we can discard it. But we don't have everyone on it yet to try. I'd give you instructions but, I haven't quite figured it all out myself yet.
The reason I suggested you guys look thru portfolios to pick favorites is because I'm thinking of using those as tests on the share account to post and discuss so that we can see how it works.
It will all be a mute point if they let us do threads like the dpl did but I haven't heard anything about that yet.
Check out the new and improved WPL site |

Well, in the meantime, I am going to put up a few of my shots I took yesterday. If any of you get a chance to pop in and give me your feed back, it would be appreciated. It's been awhile since I entered challenges with any regularity and I am trying to get some practice in before we get involved with the league. Thanks, Maggie
edited to add;
Sheryll that's a good score in a free study. Hope it climbs for you too :)

Sorry to check in so late today, but I'm one of the directors of our local Fairboard and today and tomorrow are two of the busiest days of our County Fair. Today we had the Sheep Show, the Goat show, and the Beef Show for 4-H (as well as the "Dress-a-Bunny and Dress-a-Chicken contests for the little bitty ones - ask me about the chicken whose costume included a KFC box....) We also had the open Floriculture show - with a full contingency of very intense "Flower Ladies - the Grand Dame of whom is 99 years old (literally). Used to be the tension was so thick during judging, you could cut it with a knife. A few years ago, we decided to liven things up a little, so the Fairboard added a "miniature morning glory" (aka bindweed)class. The next year I brought in a huge bundle of bindweed (after trash talking with other Fairboard members who bragged theirs was the best) and handing out bindweed to those who forgot to bring it. We had the largest number of entries of any class... the judge was an excellent sport and had something wonderful to say about each entry and there was much laughter and even clapping and cheering. And there was today. I take pictures throughout Fair and produce DVD's for the Fairboard and the Extension Office. The Livestock Sale and project releases happen tomorrow and then we can put it to bed for another year. Speaking of which, I've dozed off twice trying to write this, so I better try again tomorrow. |

Patsy, you are one of a kind! You wore me out with your account of your days at the fair and the Mini Morning Glory story was the frosting on the cake. what a way to defuse a situation, make a good-natured joke of the whole thing and add a new tradition to the festival.
I will very much look forward to seeing a sampling of your images from the fair.

Arghhh! We are going to hit 100 degrees today and nary a cloud in the sky. Had to come home and get out of the sun for a bit (and bandage my foot which somehow ended up under a calf's hoof.... no idea how that happened - but, it's the left foot - doesn't impair driving and it was (fortunately) a lightweight calf - probably no more than 1010 lbs.... could have been a heavyweight) :) Should have been wearing my boots instead of crocs, but I was taking pictures of reverse showmanship. (That's when the kids win the showmanship championship, the parents get to show in a "round robin" class. Round robin is when they show each species of animal for a few minutes each. So, the sheep kids get to show a beef, and a goat, and a horse, and a pig and a dairy cow and dairy goat. Lots of fun to see them work out the differences. The winner in each age category wins a "Master Showmanship" award and the seniors win scholarships. The parent win bragging rights and it keeps them busy and out of everyone else's hair for awhile. :) It's amazing how tense some parents get.... I know.... been there... done that...
So.... I've been married to my college sweetheart for over 37 years. We were freshmen in College when we met. Kent State happened two weeks after we started dating and the campus at the University of Missouri went ballistic. There were demonstrations and sit-ins and all sorts of small rebellions.... amazing times. He volunteered for the draft shortly after because he was from a small town and his draft number was really low. By volunteering he was supposed to be able to pick his specialty. Didn't work out that way at first, but finally did. I was majoring in Photojournalism and Anthropology with a goal of working for National Geographic. One of the editor's family lived nearby and I had grown up with him coming to our junior high and high school every year and working with us. My first big photographic foray was covering a peace march in Washington, D.C. in 1971. I was trying to do my journalistic thing and stay on the side lines, but there were nearly a million people there - so many they couldn't all march down Pennsylvania Avenue, so they broke the line and I found myself in front of the 2nd contingency going down Constitution Avenue. It was a peaceful march that day, but events later in the week after our group left were more volatile. The next summer (1972) I spent two months in Britain and Europe, traveling by train with my Eurail and Britrail passes, and mostly staying in youth hostels.
I got married and raised four kids. Apparently not very successfully because I do not yet have any grandchildren (although that tops my Christmas list every year). I grew up in Missouri, have lived in New Mexico and Oklahoma and here in Colorado for almost 24 years. I've been on the Fairboard for 20 or so years, and served on the local Board of Education for 8 1/2 years (the 1/2 year because they changed election times mid-stream). I've worked on commission for the local newspaper, been a program manager for 4-H, worked for two colleges in Personnel, worked as a program manager for construction projects for a college, and for the past 12 years have managed Worker's Compensation claims and FMLA issues for the state Department of Corrections. There are 4 of us and we manage claims for over 6700 employees in 23 facilities all over the state. There are nine state prisons in the town where I live and a huge Federal prison complex in a town 11 miles away. Almost everyone I know here works for corrections in some way or another. I am very dangerous with weapons and tend to stay away from them, but since so many people around me are proficient, I feel very safe. I have been inside, up on roofs, down in basements, in cells, porter closets, mechanical rooms, etc. in almost every correctional facility in the state (doing annual risk inspections). I would never want to live there.
I have two very large retriever-type dogs who are the loves of my life and one small silver tabby cat who rules the house and terrorizes the dogs... I also have a pair of Zebra finches who are just a lot of fun. We feed a plethora of wild birds outside, including a feisty throng of hummingbirds who are enormously entertaining.
Yipes!! I need to get back out there for awhile. The ibuprofin is kicking in. Oh, I can tell I'm tired, because I have really rambled on here... Sorry.... Back in a bit... |
