I took this last weekend while out at the Berkeley Marina to fly Isaac's first kite*. I thought it would have been good for the Freedom challenge (perhaps better than the 5-plus I ended up with), but now I'm just hoping it's just an evocative image.

In particular I'm wondering whether I should make a print image (and does it need to be cropped to 8x10 -- it was a nearer fit to 8x12) ... I'm also vaguely considering further editing (or replacement of) the sky.

Please post any comments here since the images are hosted at pBase. If I can clear up any portfolio space and move the images here I'll transfer any comments as well ...

Your image of the man on the bench is one that the viewer can project feelings into, and that certainly makes for good art. At first glance, for example, he appears to be looking at the sailboat and longs to be aboard. Hard to know what you'd crop; it is in good proportion now. The only suggestion I'd make is that maybe the border is a bit heavy. Nice work, all the way.

Thanks. My original capture size is quite small, so I use the borders to help avoid excessive resampling. In this case, I went ahead and added some more border to get it up to the right aspect ratio. I try to arrange it so that the writing can be covered while still leaving an even border. If people want to tack it up on the wall it's ready to go. If they want to mat it, they can cover as much of the border as they want, and see the photo in, as you noted, pretty good proportion.

Isaac thought the sky looked a little funny. Does the color and graininess seem within acceptible limits?

I did something similiar.. but i just forgot to enter it. I think I was having one of my vague days.

there is a suggestion I can make if the capture size was small and you use PS or PS elements. You patiently increase size at 10 percent increments until you get to the desired size. You will find a little more improvement. A little here is important.

I've done that before, with as small as 5% increments. I also have access to PS CS, so I could use the super-duper new resampling algorithms. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow and see if the trade-off of larger size vs. lower quality is worth it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yours has a nicer sky, twice!

Mine was taken after the challenge deadline, but I thought of that challenge as soon as I saw the picture.

Thanks! I went ahead and made it into a print in 8x10 format. Don't know what to do about the border ... I usually like black more than white in these cases, but if someone really thinks another color would work better I'm still open to suggestions.
