The US put in power?

His second cousin, Ahmed Hassan Bakr, became president, and Saddam was elected vice president on Nov. 9, 1969. On July 16, 1979, Saddam forced Bakr to resign and appointed himself president of Iraq and commander-in-chief of the military.

Accually..

Nice dodge. But I doubt the CIA wants me to know Saddam was the US's middle east puppet for many years.

The newsbatch link is interesting in that it mentions the hundreds of thousands of Iranians killed by saddam during THAT war plus the hundreds of thousands of Iraquis who were also killed. Bush would never be able to catch up to saddam even if he wanted to.

Again, you are missing the point.

No, I am not. One of your links seems to have disproven the title of your thread. Sorry.

Please post what your talking about as I see no such thing. Also, there is nothing to "disprove" from my thread title, as it is a question.

I would like to see more proof of this....sence this is what your point was.....

"It comes amid inflation from an estimate by Human Rights Watch in May 2003 of 290,000 'missing' to the latest claims by the Iraqi Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, that one million are missing."

I just find the figures very hard to believe.....and please dont use some left wing publication no one has ever heard of...

I just find the numbers inflated...I am not here to fight...but are the even close to correct?

I don't need to post anything; you already have. How thoroughly do you read your own links?

Let me rephrase my one statement; one of your links (the Newsbatch link) has answered the question which is the title of your thread. It "disproves" your wishful thinking.

Read it again, it does not disprove anything I have said.

Wow, that's an interesting database. But it doesn't have a column for which side perpetrated the deaths. I assume all of the car bombs, truck bombs, roadside bombs, rocket-propelled grenades, and drownings were probably perpetrated by someone other then the US military. Then you have all those gunfire deaths, but it fails to say who was doing the shooting. Then of course there's the "target" column that lists things like Iraqi police, US troops, security forces and Baath party members, which seem a little out of place in a "civilian deaths" database. But then again the whole thing is so vague, who really knows.

This the the explanation on the top of the data base:

"This database includes up to 7,350 deaths which resulted from coalition military action during the "major-combat" phase prior to May 1st 2003. In the current occupation phase the database includes all deaths which the Occupying Authority has a binding responsibility to prevent under the Geneva Conventions and Hague Regulations. This includes civilian deaths resulting from the breakdown in law and order, and deaths due to inadequate health care or sanitation."

We in America would have similar figures, if not much higher. Almost anything can be proved or disproved with the same "facts".
